Or…..errr……something else. |

Flashman , I assume this is your idea of a joke ?. At least comment so that people can understand your intent. Mwind, come to think of it yes they do look like carrots? That is until you see them in the flesh(foam)especially the underside where they are full of bubbles/holes.Washes & dry brushing really bring out the detail, see the bigger ones or the mushrooms. Lysander, not by a long shot, they're painted reddish orange / bright orange. I had some Brolac red oxide left over, thinned it down with turps & washed them. They really come out nice since the foam is yellowish or brownish if left to cure in the sun. Exp Foam hills are very easy to do,cheap & very light to carry. A plastic bag can hold a 4 x 8 table;s worth easily. Z |

I, for one, am impressed by the other pictures on your blog. I have seen something similar to represent a napalm blast in a Vietnam game and it lookd very impressive once painted up. Well done. |

Thanks Alan. Hopefully you found something inspiring. Napalm blast? Now that's very interesting. Must look it up. Might also be good for artillery hits, destroyed model markers etc. Z |

Really like those trees! How were they made? |
zrunelord | 29 Oct 2016 10:36 a.m. PST |
Glad you like them Stroezie, The Candy Floss Trees You need barbecue bamboo sticks, a palette knife or a suitable thin spreading knife , expanding foam , a piece of thick wood or foam with loads of 3-4mm holes drilled around 25mm apart & most important of all ,speed i.e. you have to be quick as the foam starts to expand immediately. Pick up a stick, squirt a small bead of foam on a piece of card or thin mdf ( you can use this for bases etc afterward so no waste )with the palette knife swipe some foam thinly on the stick ( no need to be uniform as the foam spreads in all directions ). Foam starts to stick & elongate in thin threads but this is a good thing. Place stick upright in the holed wood. Repeat. Do not let the sticks touch.Stop every so often to scrape the cured foam from the knife's blade. They will harden light yellow indoors or dark yellow in the sun.Wash or paint etc. Enjoy Z |

Nice work Z Even though some of the bits appear somewhat coprolytic, they do evoke a suitably alien landscape. |

Thanks Blackstar, Corpolytic ???? Wow man , had to look that one up :):):) You mean dead looking ? as if the land is dead ? well I guess so,they could classified as such , I was thinking about Mars when i was doing them.Deader than that you cannot get Z |
AVAMANGO | 29 Oct 2016 5:03 p.m. PST |
They are very alien looking and something i would have no issues with using in any of my space opera games… :D |
zrunelord | 30 Oct 2016 3:30 a.m. PST |
Thanks Avamango, The beauty of exp foam is that no 2 pieces come out alike & you can do several tables worth of terrain with just 1 can. Having said that exp foam is not that easy to control but can easily be cut, though this defeats the purpose of the shapes. Doing a little at a time helps. Z |

Excellent stuff. All of them look great, I especially like the rocky hills (pics 5 and 6 from the top) and the ones that look like exploded puff ball mushrooms (pics 8-10) |

Thanks Paul, Glad you like them.Exploded puff ball mushrooms, I like that :):) Go to that link & read the replies for more info. And as usual may you be inspired to do your own. My next project is to do a rollable terrain using cloth & expanding foam. Btw it can also be moulded up to a certain extent in rubber moulds but for that it is better to use the liquid type. Z |
