G'Day, can anyone suggest a decent ACW boardgame that:
-has fairly simple (or at least easily understood) rules
-could be played solo if necessary
-tries to cover the whole of the ACW period from a strategic as well as tactical point

or is there no such animal ? (in which case I'd settle for a game covering a small section of the war..)

Thanks

My favorite is called "A House Divided." It's very easy, but does a reasonably good job of covering the entire war. The battles are done fairly simply, but do give a bit of the feel of attacking with one wing, etc. I think the 4th Edition is still in print and available from Amazon and elsewhere.

Another for A House Divided

There is a workable Campaign interface for Volley and Bayonet too.

Yes, "A House Divided" – excellent game.

Wackmole928 Oct 2016 1:55 p.m. PST

yes house divided and battle cry

Battle cry for sure for individual battles but it works less well for the whole war.

I have thought about using A House Divided to do a Battle Cry campaign. It has been used as a battle generator for many other miniatures systems so why not a great board game?

Another vote for A House Divided. Tactical ones that cover multiple ones are Battle Cry link

Across Five Aprils
link

Though both of these are more Grand tactical since they cover entire large battles

Finally there is a tactical game from the nineties by a third world game publisher that was very tactical (squad counters I think) but I can't find it.

Found the name of the one from the nineties. It was called Rebel Yell by One Small Step publishing BUT the talk about the title leads me to believe you want to steer clear off it.

Thanks. Having investigated your suggestions I see that House Divided is published in 2 versions' Mayfair games and Phalanx. is there any difference between them…. apart from the box art ??

Agree with Saber6. Find the GDW version.

parrskool29 Oct 2016 9:17 a.m. PST

I was told that there was a 4th edition around… is that GDW ?

Who asked this joker29 Oct 2016 10:44 a.m. PST

GDW is the original version I believe.

Joes Shop Supporting Member of TMP29 Oct 2016 4:17 p.m. PST

Correct. The Mayfair version has improved graphics (according to some reviews on BGG).

I would also recommend the GDW version.
