I used to work in a mixed service environment where, on the birthday of the Corps, the Senior Royal Marine NCO of the establishment would learn and recite the Act establishing the Marines. This would be followed by cutting a cake with his Commando dagger. |

Supercilius Maximus technically has it right. Units of British marines were formed for earlier wars, but the present British Marines have only had a continuous existence since the Seven Years War, and were not granted the "Royal" title until 1802 or thereabouts. No disrespect intended either to this proud body of people or their traditions! |
