I have posted a review of these new Ancients rules by Simon Hall on my Website link |

It looks like a genuinely innovative set: I do like the pre game set up idea. Thanks for the review, Neil. John T |

Would love to pick up a set but sadly, they are out of stock. Kent |

I'm sorry but I'm unimpressed with this as a review – it reads more like a press release. Doesn't mention cost for instance and no description of a play test. From this description I would have serious concerns about the complexity of this game. A lot hinges on the playability and the details. There are lots of dice, markers, segments and troop characteristics. Keeping track of force morale could be tricky too. The setup phase – very very dependent on details. Does it end up just selecting terrain and first to place troops ? Could this end up in an inevitable defeat for the loser ? John |

Sometimes any information about a set of of rules that you are not familiar with can be useful. However, I suspect that these rules might not be for me, although good luck to those who will enjoy them. |

It seems the author has doubled down on Foggy complexity. Special dice and board game like set up. Order cards might work but seem a bit random (like Richard Berg stuff). Alternating unit activation also odd concept for ancient and medieval battles as they tended to fight in large battle lines that moved as a mass. Would need to see detailed playtest game though as we may be missing some features which smooth out these rough spots. TomT |

The "fight one file at a time" thing is probably the worst thing about FoG. Slows the game way down. Much better if you fought by unit. |

I've played a few games and have picked it up very quickly. A few points: - The special dice mean resolutions are quick. - The moving alternately keeps both players involved throughout, plus you can move several units together as a block. - Any reduction to a unit's status being represented by removing bases seems odd but makes for a quick and easy system. - The pre-battle set up is better thought out than others I've used. |
