Shippen's work is not a great (or even good) book. Typical late Victorian popular "history". If you absolutely must read it, get it from your library.

rmaker- You're being far too kind. Shippen is a hack, pure and simple. And his "history" even moreso. Sometimes a "forgotten" book is so for a good reason…
