This method is interesting, I look forward to see the unit painted. |

So do I, but it will be a long time! I've actually never painted an army unit-by-unit. I add one colour to each figure and work my way through a whole army, or, usually, two armies. Then I go through them again. |

Interesting stuff there. Look forward to seeing how you progress. |

How tough is it to paint the figs rear and front once on the base. One would think the quality is different but I suppose hidden somewhat. I tend to paint my Maurice armies also by regt but with 4 figs to a popsicle stick (4 x 8), and then work through the colours per pass. Quite quick and efficient. A 100pt Russian Army or 10 Inf Regt, 4 Cav regt, four guns plus limbers and command stands, took 70hours all up when I did a time and motion study. Mind you, this was over 8 months! |

Well um, ugh. I can see basing figures before painting – but not THAT close together. I don't see it as workable. And I do have pressed figures I've painted but in 15 mm and, as said, further apart. And that situation is still a challenge. I think you'll be reduced to a 'sub-standard' application of color. But, heck, its your army to do with as you choose. I'd be curious to see where you get to. But I'd hold off any further basing until seeing how it turns out. |

It's a potentially costly experiment but this is how it turned out last time I based before painting: link The ACW figures were diffucult because they are all in different positions. The end result needs to look OK but only at playing distance, not painting distance. |

The ACW look good. Different positions may have helped you get in and around figs and into nooks and crannies. The SYW stands look even more condensed and therefore potentially more challenging. I really do wonder how much time is saved as opposed to doing colours passes across 32 individual figs at a time. See my post above. |

@ GedanMawashiGeri Apologies for not responding properly to your earlier post. I won't be painting the 'inside' fronts and backs or going into any nooks and crannies! The paint is going mainly around the outside edges as if the base was a solid block. What will need to be painted for when the inside surfaces are seen from above remains uncertain. The inside surfaces of the ACW figures are not painted below the waist. With the SYW figures I don't expect to go down very far at all. The time saved is 100% as I can start using the figures now. In years that might translate into two or three given the time I have available. |
