Given the rise in tensions and wild rhetoric being thrown around I found this to be very sobering:

Nothing new here, had these thoughts back in the 60's.

i was a toddler during the Cuban Missle Crisis and was a Marine during the Carter/Reagan years. I really had hoped we had put these things behind us.

Way back when I was in high school in the late 1960's, I did a paper on whether or not the US should install multiple warheads on its ICBMs. To denote the effect of even one of those warheads, I hand drew comparable damage circles on a AAA road map of St. Louis assuming detonation over the Gateway Arch. It was very sobering, especially for an impressionable 17 year old, and was a factor in my deciding to study nuclear engineering for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

Yes … Iran will have nukes sooner than later. And we know how and why that happened. The last thing anybody in the US, Israel, etc., wants is a fundamentalist islamic theocracy with nukes.

You'd think that in most cases, but some have proven that belief to be wrong.

Given that
(a) we've cured (or can at least isolate) any disease capable of making serious inroads into the human population, and are slowly eradicating poverty, and
(b) India, China, S America and Africa can't seem to grasp the need for birth control,
it's worth considering that nuclear war is possibly the last chance of reducing our numbers to a level where we can still all fit on the planet.

Oh don't say such things ! I can just see the pitch forks and torches waving in the distance. huh?

@Max: The US alone grows enough food to feed the entire current world population (and to the tune of about 1500kcal per day, too!). The world doesn't have a resources problem, we have a distribution problem.

And I honestly pray we never see nukes used again. But I'm terrified that someone (say, North Korea) will sufficiently Bleeped text off a nuclear power that they launch.

Growing up in Denmark in the cold war, we were ever aware that at any given time, we might be annihilated in a flash for reasons that we were not involved in and through decisions we did not take.

Buy more tanks? Become pacifists? It would make no difference whatsoever to our survival.
Our lives and deaths were decided by strangers far away, who barely knew we existed and did not consider us for one moment.
