I was about to base some Prussian artillery for the Franco Prussian War and wondered where the man with the sponge should stand. I assume the barrel would need sponging out every now and again and this could presumably be done from the breech end rather than the muzzle end – does anyone know what they did??? Thanks. |

Hmm, from the pictures I have seen the sponging seems to be done from the breech. But they are later Krupps from the Balkan Wars.

I notice the sponge is quite short -I assume the main area in need of attention is at the breech end where the initial detonation is. Useful pic -thanks KT! |

The foreign type with the 'short sponge' is actually holding a loader, its for pushing the charge up the breech, sorry. |
