Ever gone through and purged everything in your collection to focus back on one single thing? Whether a setting (star wars? middle earth?), a scale, a historical period, whatever. Ever wanted to? Ever done it and regretted it? Ever done it and it was the best thing you ever did?

Yes I have done it multiple times. Sometimes I regretted it (my 28mm High Elf Warhammer Army), and sometimes it was a great liberation. |
Martin Rapier | 23 Oct 2016 1:13 a.m. PST |
No. Never sell anything (unless you run out of storage space, but I found building an extension on the house helped with that). |
nevinsrip | 23 Oct 2016 1:16 a.m. PST |
I'm getting closer and closer to that point. I'm seriously thinking of only keeping F&I War/AWI on the historical side and LOTR on the fantasy side. I just have too much stuff. |
CATenWolde | 23 Oct 2016 1:53 a.m. PST |
I've purged collections, more unpainted than painted, in order to focus on other periods. I've never regretted it, and it's always helped me actually complete and play the remaining periods. However, I can't imagine (at this point) paring down to one period. |

Purges are bad! An alternative to building an extension is moving to larger premises. |
Rich Bliss | 23 Oct 2016 2:14 a.m. PST |
I've sold some small armies off but never any thing approaching a "purge" |

Yes, multiple times. Primarily to switch scales. |
GarrisonMiniatures | 23 Oct 2016 2:35 a.m. PST |
No, though I have sold lots in the past. Lots of stuff I really should sell – got far too much – but know I won't. |

Only actually sold one part painted force because it was to complement a mate's army but he moved away so got shot of them. Having mostly small scales (2-15mm) means that it takes a lot longer to run out of space. Recent fads of 20mm & 28mm skirmish take up far more room than whole armies of 6mm. |

Yes Done it No regrets….. but it is hard !!! |

I get ride of old projects that have never been started. For example, I have a lot of wild west figures and buildings that have been collecting dust for 8 years now. Never going to work on them and I would rather have the space and money for projects I do work on. I just need to get around to listing them for sale. |

Does a girl count? Back in the late Teens I was pretty focussed on her & "toy soldiers" weren't impressing her so out they went for quite a few years. I don't regret this BTW. It's Life. |

About 1971. Realized I had a fair number of castings but couldn't field armies without other people because the effort was too dispersed. Did sales, swaps and repaints over the next year to get two armies out of the horde. Judging from the state of the garage, I did not fully absorb the lesson. |
Private Matter | 23 Oct 2016 4:41 a.m. PST |
I've purged all my 15mm and 20mm to focus on 28mm for skirmish and 6mm for large battles. Does that count? And so far I have no regrets. |
Col Durnford | 23 Oct 2016 4:50 a.m. PST |
Within the last few years I've begun to sell off some of the lead/plastic mountain. It is a very liberating and profitable means to build a war fund. I don't need it for the money or space and use the cash for guilt free purchases of other figures that I would, most likely, not buy. In at least one case, I purchased figures at price I would never be willing to pay if I was using real cash and not trade money. |
rustymusket | 23 Oct 2016 5:00 a.m. PST |
Yes, I purged down to ACW and regret not keeping Austrian Napoleonics. All 25mm. I may get back into Austrian Napoleonics. Torn over all the painting I will have to do. |

Although I've got rid of the beginnings of redundant projects I would never do so to get to a point of concentrating on just one thing. For me that would be deadly dull. However, for some it may be a good idea if a multitude of projects prevents you making any real progress. I have one regret about a project I sold that had just been started and the first samples painted. |

No. Never have, never will. |
FusilierDan | 23 Oct 2016 5:35 a.m. PST |
Never down to one period or scale. A few years ago I sold offseveral projects that I felt I wasn't going to do or had been bought because they were the closest to what I wanted. I also sold off extra figures for periods I felt were complete. There has been some regrets but not enough to make me go back and repurchase the figures. Some of the extras would have come in handy as I changed rule sets and the TO&E changed but I've worked around this. Ofcourse I've also started some new projects where the figures/games didn't exist earlier. At the time of the purge I was stressed out about having all this unpainted and unplayed lead. After selling it off I felt better and things changed and I'm playing more. There are some new projects and one's I'ld held onto that I may sell off but now I've realized that buying figures is part of the hobby even if you never use them. |

Purged to focus on maybe 17 things, but not one. Still happy I did it, more than a decade later. Need to do it again. |

Never to just focus on one thing. But, yes, I have sold off many projects over the years to help bring me back in to focus. |
Cardinal Ximenez | 23 Oct 2016 6:27 a.m. PST |
I sold off a good deal of my 15mm Napoleonics to make room for 25mm ancient armies and a large 25mm ACW collection that I received. Went from pretty much everything 1799 to 1815 to anything Austrian, the Peninsula and Hundred Days. The 10K or so figures left is still plenty to play with. |

I've sold off bits and pieces after aging them for 10+ years, but never what could be considered a purge. |
Extra Crispy | 23 Oct 2016 7:42 a.m. PST |
I'm getting ready to cull the herd. First up will be all the miscellaneous unpainted stuff. Most of this I never intended to buy – mostly it came with a collection I got on Eay etc. where I only wanted the painted items. In some cases I only wanted half a pack. After that I'm going to cull some sets: ACW Ironclads, Galleys and Age of Sail to start. Then 20mm Spanish Civil War. But my interests are far too varied to "concentrate on one thing." |

Right now I am purging figures which I have never started painting or have started painting but never completed so that I can concentrate on about a half dozen periods. |

Yes, usually to pay for new more exciting periods. Sold of my Prussian and French 1806 15mms armies and a couple DBA armies to pay for my Russian Crimean armies. Later I sold my Prussiand and French 1866 and 1870 armies to pay for my Rev War armies. If someone will take my Houston's spam-am ships can fund more War of 1812 figure. |

Seriously considered it several times. And am about to do my 'end-of-year' organizing, so might well again. But I'll most likely end up selling off side projects. NA NA |

Yes….. sold everything in 25mm/28mm about 14 years ago when we moved into a 3400 square foot house with a huge basement (figures that out) as I thought it would be a good idea to go with a smaller scale. Ended up completely replacing my 28mm SYW Prussians, Russians, and Austrians (even having more than before) and purchasing Foundry Indian Mutiny to replace the huge Indian Mutiny, NWF, and Sikh armies I'd gotten rid of. Added 20mm FPW, ACW, and 15mm SYW. More recently branched out into 28mm War of 1812, 28mm Sudan, 28mm Back of Beyond and Russian Civil War, 25mm "Old School" AWI, and additional Minifig "S" Range "25mm" (actually 20mm) FPW to add to my 2500 20mm FPW painted collection. Really wish I had my "Old School" 25mm Colonial armies back for NWF and Sudan, as well as my Foundry NWF, Sikh War, and Indian Mutiny. At the age of 70, I do some thinking about available time for my projects. |

Yes. Regretted some. Am at the point of purging my 28 mm SF. My purges generally do not completely eliminate a category. I might get rid of a few armies I never use but I never eliminate an entire genre. |
Weasel | 23 Oct 2016 8:33 p.m. PST |
I suppose the follow up question might be "Have you ever thought of selling an army but then ended up buying another one instead?" :-) |
14th NJ Vol | 24 Oct 2016 3:53 p.m. PST |
Nope never have. You lose too much time invested & money when you purge a collection. If I'm not using a particular period / army I store it away. I have a HYW English longbow army I haven't used in about 10 years. It's still there ready to game if the need arises. |
