Hello,

I would appreciate some feedback if you can help. I am hesitating on an additional purchase, it is either, not both… :)

Basically, I can buy either
the Zis-3 gun
or
the Dog teams + 50mm/Flamethrowers packs

which do you recommend me to buy? Not necessarily to min-max a list.

thank you

When flamethrower is a choice, always pick flamethrower

whitphoto23 Oct 2016 7:16 a.m. PST

Zis-3 is probably the right choice. But flame throwers!!!

As you can field them both in the long run…

Zis-3

Its almost iconic, like the T34 or the Shtormovik. Dogs were more a myth then a serious weapon. Flamethrowers were pretty specific weapons, rarely seen outside of assaults upon fortified places.

Do your opponent's like tanks? Then do the Six. Otherwise it's whatever sounds like the most fun

i am taking onboard the comments and I just can't decide. My basket online switches from the Zis-3 to the FT and the 50mm mortar…

If it can help, here is what is in the mail:
-1 x Siberian Veteran box (includes MG)
-1 x Winter Infantry box
-1 x command pack
-1 x Medium Mortar pack
-1 x Assault Engineers
-1 x Assault Engineer MG
-1 x scout pack
-1 x BA 64
-1 x Truck
-1 x T-34

:(

You can field but one mortar anyway, and if you have the medium mortar already planned, the light may be kind of redundant.
My vote goes to the Zis-3. Fielded as "divisional" gun you can use it for anti-tank and bombardements. Versatile and historical correct. What more can you ask for…

Didn't flamethrowers get nerfed in the BA 2nd Ed rules? Might be a consideration.

It is a point based game. Whatever costs the least but has the potential to kill the most?

Forager25 Oct 2016 2:39 p.m. PST

I generally just do scenarios, so I don't know about min/max-ing the points, but I'd go with the Zis-3. The more ways you can kill an AFV, the better. While you may be able to do that with the FT and/or dogs also, the ATG is probably better at it.

What's the truck going to be used for, BTW? I'd think about ditching it in favor of the FT (for the assault troops) or maybe a sniper team.

Clash95725 Oct 2016 3:30 p.m. PST

I would go with the Zis-3 divisional gun. It really is an iconic Soviet Weapon and quite useful in Bolt Action. It works as both a light howitzer and medium AT gun in Bolt Action giving it something worth doing even if it is laying down smoke.

Additionally, you already have a flamethrower if you are getting the assault engineers which also happens to be the best way to field a flamethrower, as part of a squad.

The Flamethrower Team really only works if you also take a jeep/Gaz to transport them around. I also felt that the flamethrower isn't the doom weapon it is made out be in 1st edition and now in second edition is even more of a risk as you could miss hitting in addition to running out of fuel.

As mentioned you can't field two mortars unless you take two platoons in Bolt Action. I am not overly impressed with the game's light mortar either. It is both unreliable (as any mortar) but also fairly weak both in damage output and smoke diameter.

I can't say how effective the dog teams are as I think the idea is pretty dumb historical or not. I don't think they are that great as I haven't seen other players use them either. With the group I was gaming with not exactly power-gaming, but they didn't waste much time with poor units.

Ok. I was thinking of not buying anything

I am going with the Zis…

I hate you all :)
