SESSION 35B: THE RECKONING

[DMs Note – One of the players has made an excellent observation that it can be difficult to know where the corridors end and where they continues and has made some suggestions for me to mark them. From now on you'll see some red and black arrows on the map. A red arrows means that the corridor continues in the indicated direction or there is open space in that direction (eg it opens out into something like a room) and a black arrow indicates the cave entrance. Hopefully this helps and thanks Thomas for the tip.]

ROUND 1A – REVENGE

Initiative: Orcs 20, Party 5

• Recognising that the party is probably the same evil dudes that had previously invaded their homes the orcs attack (ie no monster reaction role).
• One of the western orcs 5ft steps to the west and attacks Uthalin. Swinging its deadly falchion it strikes the flat footed dwarf in the right shoulder before he can react, doing 11pts of damage, almost dropping the mighty ranger.
• The next western orc 5ft steps to the west and also attacks Uthalin and also hits the warrior, this time in the chest for 12pts of damage. The dwarf slumps to the ground unconscious and begins to bleed out.
• The northern most eastern orc moves 15ft to the west and attacks Ansic but he misses the mighty warrior.
• The northern most orc moves 15ft to the south west and prepares to attack Ansic. First though Ansic gets an attack of opportunity on the orc. Stabbing at it with his long sword he misses. The orc swings at Ansic with his falchion and also misses.
• The last orc attempts to Demoralise Ansic. He needs a DC of 10 + 1 for Ansic's hit die – 2 for Ansics Wis = 9. He rolls a 1 +2 skill = 3 and fails to intimidate the big man.

ROUND 1B – RECOVERY

• Uthalin rolls to see if he stabilises. He needs a DC 10 + his wounds of 9 less 3 for his Con modifier = 16. He rolls a 11 and bleeds out another point.
• Asmara Channels Positive Energy healing Uthalin by 3pts of damage and stops the bleeding.
• Ansic knows that his buddy is in deep peril and yells at Lorah and Penn to move up and provide cover and for Halee to get out of the way so that he can drag Uthalin out.
• Lorah moves 10ft to the north in a north west and then north eastern path, to avoid an attack of opportunity. He slashes at the orc with his long sword but misses.
• Halee 5ft steps to the south west and looks into a large room which looks to be about 30ft by 50ft with several large tables in it. There are no orcs in it that she can see for the moment. [DMs note – just due to scale issues I've shown a picture of this room separately below the normal picture of the round. I'll keep running the combat in the more focused scale picture so that its graphically easier to see what's happening and it also reduces my workload. Note that the character figures are shown from the time when Halee acted.] Halee shouts out to the rest of the team that there is a large room to the west but no orcs in it yet that she can see.
• Thomas, from his time in the military and his personal experiences of being surrounded and almost killed three times, knows that the party is at great risk of being surrounded again. He yells out to start pulling back and he looks down the eastern corridor to see that the way is still clear. What he sees horrifies him. There are another 4 orcs there in a small room getting ready to attack the party from the rear. Pushing past Ghislain he nocks and looses an arrow but misses.
• Penn takes a 5ft step to the northwest and stabs at the offensive orc and critically hits it in the right arm, almost severing it, for 15pts of damage.
• This clears the way for Ansic to grab Uthalins body and to try to drag him back out of harms way. He can move 10ft (ie ½ his normal speed) but in grabbing Uthalin and dragging him so he provokes attacks of opportunity from the two western most orcs. The first blow misses but the second catches him in the left arm and deals 9pts of damage. He shrugs it off and pulls his friend to relative safety.
• This opens the way for Risandor to move forward and cast Sleep without fear of getting any of his own party members. He moves 10ft to the north west and casts the spell catching the four unwounded orcs. It's a 10ft radius burst so he can catch them all. They need to make a DC 10 + 1 for spell level + 3 for Cha = 14 Will save. The orcs have -1 to their will save so need to roll a 15 or better. They roll (from west to east and north to south) a 8, 14, 4 and 5. All four go to sleep.
• Thomas orders Dedrik and Ghislain to move up and to block the orcs in the south eastern room and to go defensive until he can get more help.

ROUND 2A – RENEWED VIGOUR

• The two orc groups are not in communication and cannot coordinate their attacks. All the orcs in the northern group must act before the orcs in the southern group.
• The northern most orc bleeds out 1pt of damage. Only its Ferocity is keeping it up. It swings its falchion at Penn and critically hits him in the groin for 15pts of damage. Penn slumps to the ground unconscious and starts to bleed out.
• Of the southern orcs, the northern most one charges Dedrik but misses.
• The next orc charges Ghislain and critically hits him in the right leg for 19pts of damage. Ghislain cries out and slumps to the floor unconscious and starts to bleed out.
• The remaining orcs move up and attempt to Demoralise Dedrik and Thomas. Against Dedrik the orc needs a DC check of 10 base + 1 for target hit dice + 0 for Wis = 11. He rolls a 15 +2 skill = 17 and Dedrik is Shaken for two rounds. Thomas has a Wis modifier of -1 so the remaining orc has a DC of 10. He rolls a 6 + 2 skill = 8 and fails to shake Thomas.

DEW

Mardaddy22 Oct 2016 6:55 p.m. PST

Maybe Ris can attempt to Daze the last northern orc to help Lorah?

Would rather not leave him alone to face the orc. How about if Halee does an end-around to the west, coming up just west of the wounded Penn?

Or would we all be better off with her just keeping watch on our west flank and her reacting to any enemy coming that way?

Asmara and Ris need to help Thomas!

Uthalin – DON'T GO INTO THE LIGHT!

Someone force feed Uthalin a bottle or two of the potion.
