Seems like a diversionary attack to draw assets away from Mosul. As their big Baghdadi is most likely hiding out in Mosul. And they know sooner or later if they don't do something. He'll be dead or in custody. Of course since he has a son, he maybe able to take his place ? In the hierarchy of who is related to mohammand, etc., ? Or something like that. Which if I understand this "paradigm", is the seminal reason for the entire Sunni-Shia' ongoing "debate". Of course with all the shooting and bombing that will be going on. To retake Mosul.
