I *think* the red is actually a iron dirt/brown brick color--a version of brown rather than the red shown. Just my opinion. I know that the grays and 'butternut' and browns worn by the Rebels were all over the map during the war as the right 'dyes' were not always available. That means that the ingredients/recipe for gray was not always available. |

Check out that Colt revolving rifle. Not sure what company this is. One company of the 11th wore grey with red trim, while another, The University Greys, was named after the color of its uniforms. The 11th was a relatively affluent regiment which might explain the rifle. |

Some confusion may exist regarding these uniforms. The state militia companies, and the states in general, often had their own regulations for state-issued clothing that would differ from the federal regulations for the regular army. In Mississippi's case, they used red trim to denote infantry, rather than the light blue which came with the 1852/55 regulation changes for the feds. When war broke out, many,f not all, of the first 2 dozen Mississippi Infantry regiments had red trim on the dress coats. |

According to the reports of Abm. S. Byrd, quartermaster of the 10th Virginia Infantry, the 10th Va. was issued "275 red flannel shirts" in April 1861 and another "425 red flannel shirts" in May. The regiment also received "500 pair dark blue pants" and "450 blue caps". The picture below is of members of the 10th Virginia in their interpretation of this uniform.
