A crappy game and GM with good terrain and Figs, or a really fun game with a good GM and not well painted figs or terrain?

Ragbones19 Oct 2016 10:29 a.m. PST

The best painted figures in the world can't compensate for a truly awful game.

rmaker19 Oct 2016 10:40 a.m. PST

I'll second that sentiment.

Always go with the good game and GM.

The most important components of a good game (in order):

1) The lads around the table (Must Have)
2) The GM / Rules/ Scenario (Must Have)
3) Good looking terrain (Nice to have)
4) Well painted figs (Nice to have)

Demand it all (good game with good visual aesthetics), it's within your power.

Grignotage19 Oct 2016 1:15 p.m. PST

A well designed scenario or good rules, played with a group of pleasant gamers. The terrain and figures need only meet the barest minimum requirements.

Extra said it better than I did.

It sounds like we are all in agreement.

The part that is sad is that I've played games that were stunningly beautiful, both in terrain and figures, (Over 1,000) and the GM and scenario just sucked. And while I was debating on how I can fake my own death to get out of the game, (Just, kidding I stayed the whole time.) the convention awards committee gave the GM 2 Awards for a great game. Needless to say the rest of the players were shocked as was I.

This isn't a rant about convention awards.. frankly I don't care. But I am happy to see that I'm not the only one who feels that a good GM, fellow players and rules/scenario mean more then how well the table is done or the figures.

Thanks all.

Moe

A good GM trumps a bad one every time, but n my opinion a good GM would make a strong effort to at least proved good terrain.

A good game, GM, and opponents will kick in the part of your mind that glosses over visual imperfections or compromises.
