I am looking for some rules for a fast and fun car combat game for some of my 28mm figs. Other than Car Wars, what would you recommend? Thanks.

I liked Dark Future but I reckon that must be an Ebay find now. Maybe the rules are online somewhere as a pdf and the templates are not difficult to make. |

Machinas. Instead of moving the cars around a track you move the pack around the track. This way all the players are always playing. Here's more info. link |

While I am not a fan of GW….I really liked to play Gorkamorka back in the day There is a huge online community, probably has free resources for download |

+1 for Dark Future and make your own turning template so vehicles can travel off road. |

Can't help but ask – what's wrong with Car Wars? I mean the original Steve Jackson version of course. |

Currently, I am using modified Gorka Morka rules for Mad Max games. It works well at home and at conventions too. I found Steve Jackson's Car Wars kind of slow and lacking game flow (for what I wanted). Another rule set that is free online is "Axles and Alloys". I have run Mad Max games at conventions with that rule set as well. Although, I am not sure where it is on the interwebs currently. |

I have been using modified Gaslight rules for my Road Warrior game that our group has been running at FallIn and Cold Wars for the past 6 years. It works well for a cinematic style game. For one on ones and a couple guys, Car Wars is still great! |

We really like Axles and Alloys…or is it Alloys and Axles? We've had some really fun games. It is very simple and a great convention game. |

Axles and Alloys gets my vote |

Machinas (yes, I'm a fanboy). Lots of jockeying for position, lots of dice rolling, everyone has something to do each turn…until their car gets scragged. |

Car wars got a little bogged down in mechanism for my taste, and so took way too long to do anything, same problem with Star Fleet Battles (another game I should like, but actually hate). Seems to be a flaw of the era. I freely admit that I'm a Full Thrust/Hoards of the Things kind of fella. |

Both Car Wars and SFB suffer from what Andy Chambers described in an article about game design as the 'inverted rules pyramid' syndrome; starts with a fine, basic concept, then, as it becomes popular, adds rule after rule after rule, trying to cater for all additional concepts. That's fine, until you realise that adding new rules alters the interaction with the older mechanics, in a chain reaction, leading to pages of errata, and 'master' rule books that are hundreds of pages of legalese. In its defence, Car Wars was just trying to be all things to all players, and not exclude anyone or anything (including boats, aircraft, etc) but there should come a point when a designer cries 'enough'!! Machinas is quite good fun, although a bit limiting. Some rules for big rigs, for example, would be nice. Axels and Alloys is a great free set, good bash-around fun. |

My two issues with Car Wars is: 1) We've done it already and want something new 2) It's really hard to scale it up to 28mm Other than that, I always like Car Wars.

Gorkamorka is the only real choice if you want interaction w/ pedestrians, leaping from vehicle to vehicle, flamethrowers, rocket lauchers, etc. And that is what we are all after in Mad Max, right? ;) |
