…wargaming, never mind politics….

"On Wednesday, Spartan Games published a blog announcing plans for a new game: Dystopian Empires, with the idea of launching a Kickstarter campaign towards the end of October.

This would be a 1/100th scale (15mm) VSF game, based in the Dystopian Wars universe, and would be a company-level game that would combine infantry, vehicles and aircraft in a different way to what had previously been done with either Dystopian Wars or Dystopian Legions…"

Still rushing new games out the door instead of developing what they have.

I think they got surprised (although you can argue that if they read their own forums they should not have been) but I give them credit for reacting to feedback.

Yes, to give credit where credit is due Spartan appears to have opened their ears to the feedback. We'll see what they do with it but it is good to see.

Overall I think the general critique it spot on; too many games, and this would be the third(!) set in the same world but in a new scale. Seems like an odd and potentially self-cannibalizing business model.

Can predict Spartan will be extremely busy in late October. Most likely they will twist feedback into their own fictional games and ears will lose interest.

Here's a very positive article – link – that explains their thinking.

I quote from it -"So how will Spartan Games use Kickstarter?

Right now it won't be for a new game! You gave us feedback that made that clear to us, and we have now conducted a survey to learn exactly what you want us to develop. The data collated by the survey is fantastic and we'd like to thank those of you who took part. The results have allowed us to go back to the drawing board and – most importantly – with your survey data driving it we are reshaping our Kickstarter plans.

Naturally the up-front funding is a benefit to us and we're not pretending that it isn't, but so is the opportunity for ongoing dialog."

(Though I still say releasing "Gotterdammerung" would be great, then wait 18 months for any more new rules sets.)
