Just a personal observation which I've transferred to painting.

we used to get muddy patches on the trousers just below the knees rather than on the knee when in the kneeling position.
and a triangle, with the Base at the bottom, from the ankles up to the knees on the inside leg from muddy boots and trouser legs rubbing together.

the outer forearms on the jackets were usually in contact with the ground the most from the prone position /crawling etc.

this was caused because British troops like wearing baggier clothing.
