I just watched the Netflix original film: The Siege of Jadotville about the siege of a company of Irish soldiers, part of the UN peacekeeping force, by thousands of African gendarmes and European mercenaries in Katanga in 1961. While not set in the 19th century, it gives me hope that we might see more films set during the colonial period in Africa, since this film had to deal with all the current issues of political correctness that could handicap other productions. And it was a good movie, highly recommended. almost a mini – Zulu! |

I saw this movie last night, really enjoyed it. I'm no expert but the uniforms and gear looked the part (FNs, Vickers, Stens and Brens, etc.). The Katangan plane looked like it was a Fouga although was that an old that F4 was behind Dag Hammerskojld's plane? A most welcome surprise from Netflix and good to see the Irish soldiers who fought there get some recognition. Now where are my AK47 Republic rules….. |

Watched it. Like it a lot, actually. I read long ago a novel by Jean Laterguy that told the story from the other side. He made it sound a lot less heroic, though. |
