As I get nearer to having an army to play with I am considering rules. My first point of call has been Black Powder, I like how they play and can manipulate them very easily to fit the period and tailor the armies.

I am however intrigued by GAPA and wondered if anyone had played them? I intend to play with anywhere from 10-30 units per side

Roger, take a look at James' recent replay,

and his earlier Ga Pa review:

These two entries ought to provide a good starting point.

Have played Ga Pa many times, both first and second edition and have lots of fun with both. Not to get into a review, but the game is fun. Lloyd

GaPa is one of the more really interesting, detailed with period nuance set of rules out there. In my opinion a polar opposite to Blackpowder. It is a bit TOO much of detail for me and the time that I have to commit to a game, but if I was 19 and in college again, they would be my 18thC rules. They are serious.

I played it once years ago It was too fiddly for me. I just didn't like it and have never played it since. I also don't know anyone who plays it, so that cuts down on the opportunities to try it again.

Version 1 is a far less detailed game. Always liked the redressing of ranks roll at the of the turn. Made me feel the NCO's were doing their part in the game. Version 2 added far more detail. The army lists are very detailed and can add some flavor with army variants. We play the rules using 6mm miniatures. Covers both WSS as well as the GNW period. I recommend the rules.

Very detailed set of rules I would also agree perhaps too much detail.

I have the first edition but not the second – interesting to hear about the differences. Any more comments on playability or preferences between the two editions?
