Which of the Die Hard movies would you recommend to your fellow wargamers? |

2. Best Christmas movie ever Curious how it often airs in the UK just before I take a flight to Dulles :) |
John Treadaway | 15 Oct 2016 9:39 p.m. PST |
Ummmm. None of them? John T |

All of them, though I'm partial to the first one the most, I suspect. 2 was very good as well. |

Die Hard is one of the best films ever, ever tire of seeing it. |

I am pretty sure that it is illegal in 37 countries to use the words "best" and "Die Hard movie" in the same sentence. |
Dynaman8789 | 16 Oct 2016 5:31 a.m. PST |
Since all but the first one stink it would have to be the first one. Yippie… |
Winston Smith | 16 Oct 2016 6:22 a.m. PST |
The original of course. OFM's guide to movies: "Whenever a studio decides that a one off film needs to have a sequel, those that follow hardly ever compare to the originality of the first. This is particularly true if the film is followed by a tv show." Yes, I am particularly including Star Wars, the Godfather and MASH. But not the Odd Couple, as regarding movie to tv. But it does include any "sequel" tv series. |

The first one. It was the only one that was any good. |

The first one, like most originals, was best….the others were ok. Yippie ki yay! |

DH the original, but DH2 and DH4 (Live Free or Die Hard) are pretty close. DH3 (DH with a Vengeance) is okay not great, and the most recent entry, DH5 (A Good Day to DH) is atrocious. Hopefully DH doesn't get another sequel and is put to rest for good. |

For whatever reason, I really enjoyed 4 – Live Free or Die Hard. Best thing about 5 was the catchphrase: "Yippie Ki-Yay Mother Russia" |

Maybe the first one. Maybe. |
nazrat | 17 Oct 2016 6:51 a.m. PST |
They are barely adequate movies, so I would vote none of them are "best". |
Winston Smith | 17 Oct 2016 11:03 a.m. PST |
The only reason the sequels exist is because Hollywood has no imagination. The first was a fun silly movie. The rest are poor imitations. |

first one, because it's the first one and Beethoven's 9th hummed throughout. but really, they were all very forgettable movies. |

'Die Hard' was so influential that not only did it spawn four sequels of its own but became a template for a slew of copycat knock-offs that are nothing more than variations (slight tweaks really) on the same lone wolf-against-the-odds theme. One such knock-off, Steven Seagal's 'Under Siege,' even had its own sequel. The possibilities are virtually endless. You can have 'Die Hard' in any setting, like on a ship ('Under Siege'), a plane ('Passenger 57' and 'Air Force One'), in the desert ('Broken Arrow'), at the White House ('Olympus has Fallen' and 'White House Down') and even in a hockey stadium ('Sudden Death'). |

In descending order: DH 1 The classic. DH 4 Old and young vs. the computer world. New twist to an old theme. Slightly over the top, but in DH style. DH 3 Black and white against evil. Nice idea about the quiz. The bad ones: DH 2 Nothing but a sequel. Everything worse than the original. DH 5 The dumb muscle as the son. I still fear they planed to make a restart with Jay Courtney. Irrelevant anecdote: In DH there is IMO the seldom thing, that something was made better with the syncronisation. In the german versions "Yipi a yeah mother…" is made to "Yipi a yeah Schweinebacke". That translates to pork cheek, what is absolutely silly. But in german it works and is much more sophisticated. |

There's also DH in London (London has Fallen), onboard a space staion/prison complex (Lockout) and in a dystopian hab complex (Dredd). Of course, you might say that DH itself is derivative of the one-man army type movies from the 80's like 'Rambo,' 'Missing in Action' and 'Commando.' |
