Well' we've fought our first Italian Wars battle using Pike and Shotte published by Warlord Games. My initial thoughts are, on the whole, very positive. I've done a battle report and a first impression review of the rules. If you want to read more the report is here (includes more pics too): link |

Good AAR. What do you think it gave you that your own Hell Broke Loose did not or did you just fancy a change? |

Mainly did it for a change. Plus, I have to organise an Italian Wars weekend for the League of Gentlemen Wargamers next year and I'm scouting for a simple ruleset / mechanisms. I think P&S might be too much to use as it is, but a simplified version (no orders just roll for 1, 2, 3 moves, etc.) might work quite well. It has units of about the right size for such a game. Players would have 6 – 10 units each. There might be 15 players. I'm planning to do an Italian Wars version of the boardgame Kingmaker. This was done once before for a WoR bash and it worked a treat and kept everyone entertained for two days. Photo taken from the Scottish border, Bill, furthest away, is stood in the English Channel. The white towers, centre left, are the castles of North Wales. I'd do a similar thing but it would be Italy and sides would be French or Imperial; some players would be Italian states in one camp or the other – with the option to change sides of course.

Great post James, beautiful figures! P&S seems similar to Armati 2, have you ever tried it? We have makers for hits on units, accumulated fatigue and disorder. We've also cut sticks to various lengths for movement. I get what you mean about loosing some light troops as key units towards army morale break point. Armati 2 has a fair amount of light cavalry in some armies that are key units. However light troops and skirmishers never count. We play games that are usually 350+ figures per side. Some massive ones with several thousand. The smaller games can be over in one to three hours. Larger, 5 hours on average. |

Thanks for the review. I've played P&S for ECW a couple of times and it is not my favorite for that era. It think there is a break down when it comes to mixed units and I share your break point concerns. The "gamey" thing to do is make sure each of your battalia have an odd number of units and then make sure you have an odd number of battalia. |
