What are the differences between Rapid Fire 2nd Version and the newer 3rd Version? Thanks, BR. |

A few months ago I was in touch with Colin of RF to confirm that the PDF of RF II on wargamervault was authorized (it is). He said that while a new release was in the works (at least a year out) it would not contain an substantial changes from RF II. |

Yes, I've heard some simplified small arms tables. |

As far as RF is concerned I personally think a version 111 would be one version too many, the 2nd ed was great ar tying up lose ends on a very solid set of WW2 rules and I'd be a shame if it went down the slippery slope of numerous editions, rather just reformat the actual book bring it up to date with new pics clearer diagrams and illustrations, situation explanations etc. I'd re buy a copy of updated rules that were so solid and then make more theatre campaign books too. Rapid Fire are solid. They could even scale down for a skirmish version or up fo Division and corps. |

Zargon, That's pretty much what I took away from my e-mail conversation with Colin. Some clean up and no major changes to be expected in RF III. |

As a long time Rapid Fire player I agree with you gentlemen. There are enough ambiguities, which have been answered in some of the official replies, to warrant a cleaned up and clarified 3rd edition. I would not say "no" to a few more optional rules (my own favorite being ammunition limits for tanks, AT guns and artillery). I think Zargon sets an excellent template for number 3! |

They could do worse than put the excellent scenarios which were in RF v1 back into the rulebook. |

Rest assured still a great game! Updates, errata, scenarios, new equipment, you name it still available for free on the Rapid Fire website which is kept up to date. rapid-fire-uk.com |

I would not say "no" to a few more optional rules (my own favorite being ammunition limits for tanks, AT guns and artillery) I'm sure I've read somewhere of a 5 rounds per tank/gun optional ammo limit. |

A revised 3rd version would be most welcome. RF would benefit from a revision that manages to unify the various firing methods into a single, more cohesive system. The rules are not very complex but everthing you want to do in the game require a different kind of rolling mechanism so you need to remember way too many things. Also, I think it needs some kind of C&C rules, something that I´m missing since 1st edition. Command units doesn´t have any relevance in the game besides a morale penalty if the HQ figure is wiped out (I´m not taking in count the optional "written orders" system because it´s a very outdated mechanic and not practical at all). |

Actually we find 6 works best for ammunition. Bought some of those "micro" dice. Easy to place on the rear deck of tanks or on the AT or Arty stands. Just rotate to the next lower number to show remaining rounds. Very easy and no need to keep track on paper. Somewhere I remember an optional rule showing tracking each tank. They had put like 3 or so tanks on each 3 X 5 card. Ammunition was 7 rounds but the catch was, before the game began, you had to designate how many of those were AP and how many HE. Interesting but overly complicating and hate extraneous paper on/around the table. |

I think Ruben makes a good point that dovetails with most of the other comments. RF3 mostly just needs to be an update with further explanations and examples. But through the many scenario and OOB books there have been similarly many new mechanics and the overall evolution of the rules was, it seems, done at times on an ad hoc basis. So, there are lots of different combat mechanics sprinkled across the game. Reconsidering some of the peripheral mechanics to better dovetail into, say, the combat chart, would be a positive and minor improvement in the game. Either way, I am buying the new book. I just love this game and the supporting materials are superb -- pure inspiration. |
