Hi guys, I've read this rule over again and still don't really get it. I get that a unit can only move straight forward or backwards within its front or rear zone but 1. Can it change its facing (by wheeling) at the end of its move? 2. If the answer to 1 above was yes: In situations where the unit has more than one move, can the unit move straight forward, wheel to change its front quarter so that in subsequent moves it could charge onto an enemy flank if it has orders to charge. E.g. My unit has an enemy unit obliquely to its front right within proximity distance. Can my order be "move straight forward and wheel to face the flank of the enemy unit, then charge home"? This would make sense to me, but I can't find the bit in the rules that says it is so. |

All it does is stop you moving sideways in the face of the enemy, apart from that you can move forward or backwards, wheeling or whatever you want to do. |

My unit has an enemy unit obliquely to its front right within proximity distance. Can my order be "move straight forward and wheel to face the flank of the enemy unit, then charge home"? - No. You can only charge the quarter of the enemy unit that you were in at the start of your TURN, not individual moves. So you could order to advance in your front quater, wheel and end on their flank. But you could not charge the flank as you started in the enemy units front quarter.
The Warlord forum is the place to go for answers.

Thanks for the clarification. I stopped playing B.P. because the group I was playing with allowed just such a move if a triple move was rolled because they could not find anything in the rules not to allow it. Can you site the page or area where this is found in the rule book? |

Thanks Jaztez. I've recently become a member of that forum but the traffic there is so much slower than here. I'm playing my first game tomorrow with two other P&S virgins so I needed an answer quickly. It looks like a pretty important rule. I did do a search on the question on the P&S forum, but the internal site search doesn't throw up the right answer unless you know exactly the right search term, and general searches on things like 'proximity rule' throws up a stack of needles too big to trawl. Again Jaztez, thanks. Your answer is a good and clear. Thinking I must have missed something – the word 'turn' – I've just checked the rule again but I can't find any mention of the word 'turn'. I'm sure you are right as it makes game sense that way. The rule merely states that "Once units are within 12" of any enemy units, all subsequent movement must be made entirely within their front and rear quarter". It doesn't say that front quarter / rear quarter doesn't change move to move. It's not covered (as far as I can see) in charges either. It's not so much as an obvious rule as a game convention then – and so many 'rules' in this hobby are. I love the Italian Wars and its been over a year (Derby show 2015) since I got those particular toys out.

Hi guys, Thankfully, Bill G. has shown me the where the rule can be found. The answer has nothing to do with proximity distance and lies in the mid page paragraph of p.60 (and its associated diagram below) on charging. I read that page more than once and missed the import of the five words that hold the key, they are "when the order is received". Again, Jaztez, thanks. All cleared up. |
