Yes it's for real, we've been painting planes in Russian/Soviet colors for well over 40 years now for Red Flag & Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun). There's no conspiracy theory there. |

Ha! That website is hilarious. |

Nothing sinister here. The last thing anybody being bombed would notice would be national markings. Everything and everybody's are painted in various shades of gray. Plus they do move kind of fast. "Hey! That's an F-18! The Americans are bombing us!" "Naaaah. Can't be. It's got Russian markings." |

Here are pics of more F-18 aggressors. The navy and marines paint red stars on the tails but not the air force.

The aggressors always have the coolest paint jobs. |

I love conspiracy theories, they are so much fun! By repainting these fighter jets, they can send them out on bombing missions, make certain they fly low and slow around a target a few times so people on the ground whip out their cellphone cameras to video the attack, Number one on the list of things attack pilots don't want to do: fly low and slow over a target, multiple times. And if there are photos anyone can tell an F/A-18 from a Su-30. You'd have to make sure people saw the colors without getting a photograph. Also, you need an entire carrier crew to keep a secret. Seems unlikely. |

Yeah, I clicked on the link in the OP. Now, I'm considering cleaning my computer via a bleach bath. BWW |

Now now folks. Tin foil hat wearing, black helicopter, faked moon landing, Alien bodies in Area 51 sites serve a valuable purpose but only Sasquatch knows and he isn't telling. |

Yup. The Navy (and Marines) paint F18s up in MiG29 drag as part of the Aggressor squadrons. Basically been done since we created the Top Gun school! |

Yep, love those paintjobs. A pity they don't use our Mig-29s as aggressors though. Interesting to see the ground crew personnel next to them. Those little Hornets are bigger than I thought. |

And the Air Force uses F-16's for the same thing, this has been around since the '70s they started out using F-5's

A pity they don't use our Mig-29s as aggressors though. Those MiG-29s haven't been airworthy for years. They are lacking spare parts and I doubt the Russians would be willing to help. They're also older MiG-29s (9-12/9-13 variants) and lacking all the modern Russian goodies ala improved radar, better engines, R-77 (aka AMRAAMSKI) capability etc. These are quite primitive compared to an F-16C or F/A-18C. The Americans did use MiG-17/-21/-23s at Groom Lake in a training role in the past. They were even given US style fighter designations ala YF-110, YF-113 and YF-114. The aircraft were gathered from a variety of sources (Israel, Indonesia and Egypt). There was also 12 new build F-7Bs (MiG-21F-13) acquired from China prior to Tianaman Square massacre. (USA was happy to sell Commie China just about anything back then and companies like Grumman were actively involved in defence projects with China. The Europeans and Israelis were the same. This is why a lot of Chinese tech has a Western origin – it was actively sold to them by greedy arms manufacturers who were endorsed by short sighted governments). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4477th_Test_and_Evaluation_Squadron |
