SESSION 29: PREPARATIONS [DMs Note: I'd just like to say on a personal level, it's great to have a couple of guys from the armed forces in the game. I, and I'm sure others feel the same, really appreciate your contributions to our safety, particularly in these dark times. Thank you.] The party immediately start to organise their resources. They call on Fenton to see what stores he has and what he can do to equip the men at arms and if he has any masterwork weapons.
They strike a deal with him to sell the half plate and the two sets of chain mail for four sets of scale mail armour, four short bows and three long swords and 85gp back in change. [DM Note: To help keep me sane I think we've got to keep the men at arms all equipped the same]. In terms of masterworked armour and weapons Fenton says that he can effectively take any piece of equipment that anyone has and can work on it over a week to make it masterworked or he can make a new masterwork item. Fenton starts to tell them a long tale of his families experience in making fine arms and armour, all of which is too long winded to be repeated here today, but the summary is that he is so good that he is able to ‘master work' items up to the extent that they are effectively +2 magical items. [DMs Note: You can pay Fenton to make you a Masterwork or a +1 or a +2 magic armour or weapon. It'll cost the standard amounts as described in the Core Rule book for any of those items, ie 300gp for masterworked, 1000gp for magic armour or shield +1, 2000gp for magic weapon +1 etc. In this way party members won't be penalised for focusing in certain weapons with their skills and feats etc and also they'll have something to spend their wealth on. He cannot do special magic abilities, eg flaming sword. He's not that fancy.] Halee thinks about ordering masterworked Studded Leather armour and Uthalin thinks about getting his family Urgrosh masterworked. Thomas is thinking more about his ability as an archer and the merit of getting a Composite Long Bow (+2 strength to damage) and maybe a masterworked composite long bow. They decide not to sell the Rope of Climbing and give it to Risandor to hold onto for the moment and Risandor will also hold onto the unidentified scroll. They think that the best course of action might be to sell the great axe +1 and to distribute the funds between the party members so that they might be able to upgrade their equipment. They leave the great axe with Fenton for the moment to mind it for them.
They don their new equipment and trudge towards Worisholfen Hamlet. They head to the northeast to gain the advantage of cover by approaching Worishofen Hamlet from the cover of the woods.
Approaching the Hamlet they witness a scene of chaos. There is close to ¾ of a score of goblins trying to break into the walled chateau and they can hear the desperate cries of the Worisholfen family and helpers from within. The goblins are uncoordinated, mounting a series of attacks along the different parts of the compound.
The walls of the chateau are approximately 10ft high and the goblins are stacking materials against the base of the walls to gain height to climb over. Some of them are carrying torches and are attempting to fire the compound but haven't succeeded yet. In the distance, the party can also hear cries for help from the slave humpies. Risandor recalls that there are about ½ a dozen halfling and a dozen goblin slaves housed in the small village. The party cannot see this attack yet because of an intervening hill.
[DMs Note: I'll update the character sheet next time.]

Thomas think the party should have the melee people between the East hill and the trees. Bow armed people could initiate and pick off the goblins from the tree line. If the goblins charge either group the other can attack their flank. If they come at all of us we'll still be in one extended line. If things goes well we can sweep towards the west. Ideally he'd want to be on the hill but we probably don't have time to relocate that far. |

I'd like to know distances/range at that map scale, and I like Thomas' plan. Where do the men-at-arms fall into that plan? As melee or ranged? Ranged would get off more shots per round, but having all four leaves melee with scant numbers. Maybe have them centerline? bows then switch to melee and flank if the east PC's get charged? |

The line would be an L shape along the tree line and then up towards the hill. from West to East (Ranged) Penn, Thomas, Halee, Risandor, (melee) other 3 men at arms, Uthalin and Ansic. The guys at the ends would have more options for maneuver while Halee and Risandor has the option to fall back and have their flank close in to block off direct attack. If the goblins got smart and swing east to attack from up hill we can circle left and up to rescue the chateau without much fighting. |

My bad on the scale. I was rushed for time. If we say that the gate is 10ft wide then the length of the compound wall that has the gate in it is approx 100ft long. That makes, for example, the distance between the gate and the front character somewhere between 100 and 110ft. I'll get a scale in there next time. So take it that the front wall of the compound is 100ft (ie the full extent of the compound from the outside so from the south western corner of the south western building to the corner of the wall on the south eastern end) and I'll draw the scale to reflect that. Will freed goblin slaves take up arms against the PC's and former masters? Looks like 14 goblins attacking the manor directly plus however many more come from the slave area. Any expectation of help/a sortie from inside the manor if the PC's are winning? |
Mardaddy | 10 Oct 2016 7:40 p.m. PST |
PMed you, Tom. Thank you, DEW, I just wanted a good idea what the penalties would be for the ranged attacks, Shortbows are 60ft range, so that would be a -2. |
Dartagnan2016 | 11 Oct 2016 6:33 a.m. PST |
OK, so here are a few thoughts from Risandor's point of view. He can get off a sleep spell (110 ft range) from the first round, targeting the centre of the goblin force …. all goblins within radius 10' will have to check, giving a good chance of him taking 4 goblins out of the fight for one minute. If the party form up as described and don't close the range, the men at arms will be at -2, so perhaps we close on the goblins, shooting as we go. Risandor really wants to help the other halflings, but has seen that goblinoids often break once they start to take casualties, so inflicting harm on the large group attacking the farmstead might be enough to drive them off. Then the party could go and check out what's happening at the slave compound, perhaps with someone going to check that the family members are OK? So his first two rounds of actions would appear to be best used as a move and cast a sleep spell followed by inspire courage, third round use his bow to add weight to the attack on the large goblin force. |

Just to be sure, do we have the two potions of healing from Markis as well as our own purchased 3 potions? And to be absolutely certain of hitting as many goblins as possible with the sleep, it would be best for Risandor to take a move action forward first. If the line advances with him, the four rearmost goblins might be within 60' for the men at arms with their shortbows. Looking again at the map, the goblins are in two groups of 5 so the spell will have to target one group. |

On a separate note, Mardaddy asked in a previous post about party treasure. My vote is that one third of funds remain in the party pot in future, and the remainder is divided as personal loot. This should keep a good pool of cash for party stuff, upkeep of our men at arms, hostel bills etc. If any new PC, or Risandor, start crafting, e.g., scrolls or potions for party use, I'd like to suggest that crafting costs come from the party pot, and the items therefore remain group treasure. What do people think? |

After that post by Dartagnan, upon self reflection, I saw I was dominating the public posting and not letting others get a chance to come up with their own tactical ideas before I had already put something on the table publicly and was asking for, "A or B." So I am backing off a bit for now, and will try to post after someone else posts first in the interest of encouraging more varied and fuller participation from my fellow players. Thank you for the headslap, Dartangnan. I needed it, I don't want to be, "that guy." |
Mardaddy | 11 Oct 2016 9:09 a.m. PST |
Full agreement regarding crafting costs, we all benefit, we should all bear the cost. I support a combo of Thomas and Ris' plans… do up the L shaped line, move fwd a bit, cast the spell, loose the arrows along goblins on the edges (so we do not target the spell effect area) and react accordingly. If they fail the check and scatter, pick off as many as we can as they run away before heading to the slave quarters and Manor (open to suggestions regarding which party members do which.) For the DM – Did or do we actually see some goblins make it over the wall? It makes a difference in what we decide to do after the goblins outside are dealt with (one way or another.) |

Mardaddy, this is a great experimental game … I've never played Pathfinder before or done a classic RPG over the internet with only partial voice in what my PC does … and it's been very enjoyable! Inevitably, the group cohesion thing and shared planning doesn't work so well in this format, so we need ideas on the table to help DEW shape the game and present our successes/failures. For Risandor, it's clearly a case of break the main force then go to the rescue of the Halfling slaves …. hoping some muscle will join him for the trip! The only worry is that the goblin slaves will join the attackers, doubling their numbers. … |

Mardaddy, once you wear stripes they never really come off. I have a similar problem in face to face games and have to work at not dominating. owen |
