Most learned gentlemen, I am painting up the 23rd and 24th regiments and have found a discrepancy. The Mont St Jean Website has the 23rd with red color patches and shoulder tabs. link The Brigade uniform plates sold by Calpe have them with yellow color patches a yellow band on the cap and red shoulder tabs. link Which is correct? Thanks in advance Thomas. |

According to David Nash, "The Prussian Army" printed by Almark, Calpe has it correct. The 11th Reserve was numbered 23rd in March of 2015. The cadre wore the uniform of the 2nd Silesian Inf Regt, as is shown in the Brigade plate, but then men, as they joined, were given grey uniform with yellow collar patches and grey Schirmutze with yellow cap band. While there are very limited resources on the Prussian reserve infantry, I've never known the Nash book -- published first in 1972 -- to be wrong. Other websites have "borrowed" the Nash text and his versions are widely distributed. |

OK -- I may have misspoke to some degree. Another source is The Napoleon Series. Go to Organization, Strategy and Tactics, select Prussia and there is a significant piece regarding Prussian reserve regiments. I always thought the piece was based upon Nash (and Nash says his information is from contemporary art etc.) But now that I look at The Napoleon Series site, it says the following at the start of that piece: This paper was first published as a pamphlet by the Napoleonic Association in the late 1970s. The Napoleonic Association has very generously given us permission to place it on the Napoleon Series. It is reproduced in its entirety except for those parts that cover wargaming. Click here for more information on the Napoleonic Association. |

According to Summerfield, in 1813-1814, the 11RIR had grey coat with yellow collar patch and red shoulder straps. Yellow band on gray Schirmutze until mid 1813 then Prussian shako. For IR22 in 1815, gray coat with poppy red collar, red shoulder straps still with shako. Dr. Summerfield's books are the best. Just wish there was a volume on line cavalry and artillery. Dale |
