The recent post on the Jadotville movie got me thinking about organizing a mini-version of Jadotville. Posting the Ambush Alley Games Force on Force Irish platoon organization here in case others have a need for some sort of building block. Initiative Level: D8 to D10 Confidence Level: Confident to High Supply Level: Normal Body Armor: N/A Troop Quality/Morale: D8/D10 Typical Unit Attributes: Medic – Roll on the Advanced First Aid Table for Causality Checks. Outgunned – opposing force receives a bonus Firepower Die. A platoon is three rifle sections with each rifle section consisting of the following: Command Team 1x Leader w/Sten SMG 1x Gunner w/Bren Gun 2x Riflemen w/No. 4 Lee Enfield Rifle Team 1x Leader w/No. 4 Lee Enfield 5x Riflemen w/No. 4 Lee Enfield |

Very interesting. Could work well with the forces I am painting up. Thanks Joe |

The gendarmes also used bazookas, unsure what type though… |

Just came back from a trip to Ireland and picked up the book about this battle. In the photographs most men appear hatless. I don't have many 15 mm figs without hats. There are a few photos with either berets or us style helmets. The helmets have "UN" stenciled on some. Does anyone know if these are light blue? If so I have left over US army figures that I could paint up. At 15mm it is all about the headcover. Second question; in my limited reading, it appears that the Irish squad had 6 rifles and a bren gun. That is not what Buckeye listed above. Were they short of brens? Thanks. I agree this could make a good campaign. Joe |

The SMG was actually the Swedish Carl Gustav M/45. Apparently it's no longer available so when filming they hunted around in South Africa and got hold of a few for use in the film. On checking the serial numbers they determined that some of them were actually used in the battle. |

Interesting stuff! Andy, thanks for the link; cover tells me all I needed to know. Checked with FOF Bush Wars and they state that most of the Irish used the british "turtle helmet". That is one of the few hats I have never seen in any of the photos. they also confirm that the Irish platoon only had one bren gun. Most have had a shortage. Thanks Joe Geoff, when are you going to make some VABs for my French foreign legion? |
