Infantry AB – 18 mm Mounted Officers – Sho Boki on AB horses Generalquartiermeisterstab – AB (with a bit scale creep) As expected from AB and Sho – very nice miniatures, a pleasure to paint – the detail is incredible, depicting the different Hungarian cuffs with lace (for example). This time – no more than a base colour and a wash – with the exception of white where a different method is used. Often there is a complaint that the Austrian Army isn't colourfull, I cannot share this – looking at this unit

VW, Great looking unit and I don't think the earlier Austrians are not colorful as I painted these in 25/28mm Foundry figures years ago. |

Wonderful!! How will you base them? That's the one Hungarian battalion that I have finished. I made my command figures the 1798 helmet to show a transition, and I think my facing colour is a little too red now that I see yours… link |

Excellent job Winterfeldt ! I've already loved your Boki Russian generals but those Austrians are great too ! I'm also in the Revolution wars now especially in 1796 Italy so please, go on with posting your stuffs as your work and Eclipsing Binaries' Marengo Project are good sources of inspiration ! Salut et Fraternité ! Franck |

@Eclipsing Binaries Great idea how you did re-present the transition period. I will base mine very old schol, one miniature represents 40 men, so for my Hungarian battalion in will be 6 bases with 5 miniatures each. Next in line are the rest of Sho Bokis epic Russian general staff series. @Franck Good luck with your French Revolutionary project, Sho will do the French infantry as well, already those with helmet are in the pipe line, hopefully more to come Salut et Fraternité |

Superb painting and when based as closely packed as on first photos, then result will be astonishing. |

Base + wash (other than white of course) – very humbling For the shoes and funny hats – what base colour and wash do you use ? The colour of the bay horse is really nice – what do you use for that ? Thanks John |

shoes I mix a light blue grey with acrylics – over that a wash/glaze of artist water colours of lamp black with a bit Prussian blue, in case I like i take off some of the artist water colour with a wet brush. Funny hat aka Kaskett – a slightly redish light grey – for exampe a mix of GW Scab red with CdA black and CdA white, to create a sort of warm base, the wash/glaze then with ivory black and a bit crimson in it. As for the bay horse – I cannot say – I usually use any light acrylic colour (like dark flesh, curry, light brown) and then again use washes/glazes of different artist water colour browns to achieve variety, favourtis are burned umber, umber, burnt sienna, mixes of those etc. And again, where I deem to like some lights I take again some paint off with a wet brush. The disadvantage of this technique is – one has to varnish the miniatures. Hope that helps a bit. Forgot to say that I use GW white spray for priming and on top, this time a real wash of either very dark violet (almost like neutral grey) or in this case of Austrians – sepia (this time artist acrylics – which I find much mor suitable for this task than hobby ones, an alternative would be – recently discovered by myself Schmincke Aero Color (Acrylics) – which are lovely for thin glazes or washes) When painting on the base colour – I don't paint over the deep shadows, in short some sort of pre painting. |
