The plastic Union infantry set can now be pre-ordered from Perry Miniatures… "28mm hard plastic figures sculpted by Alan Perry Cover art by Peter Dennis. The figures in this box represent the bulk of the Union Infantry forces throughout the Civil War. The figures are in the four buttoned sack coats which was the most common type of coat worn by Federal troops during the war. The set also contains both forage caps and board-brimmed hats for all the figures. With this set you can have up to 30 infantry charging, or 30 ‘right shoulder shift' with a command of four figures. There is a 4 figure command which includes arms for NCOs and a bugler. In addition there are 6 figures in skirmish poses. There are many variations which can be built with this set as there are additional skirmishing arms on the ‘main' infantry frame and various arms on the command frame. There are 40 figures in this box, flags, painting guide and unit bases."

Good news! I've been hoping these would come out so I could do Civil War skirmishes. Battles at Cow Creek Station, Greer Garson's old ranch, Tabasco Sauce (Avery) Island! They would still have worn the same uniform in 1866-67, wouldn't they? Maybe I could do the Fetterman Massacre, too! Grelber |

Yes. The major change was the army-wide rearming with breech loading rifles with metallic cartridges. The uniforms and equipment continued until the 1872 uniform changes. Cartridge boxes had their metal inserts removed and replaced by wooden blocks drilled for the new cartridges. many infantry were given two boxes to wear upon the waistbelt, and the cap box discarded. Interestingly enough, in 1866, some 10,000 Spencer carbines were converted to infantry rifles with the addition of new barrels, complete with bayonet lugs. A friend of mine has one, which still has the carbine sling bar and ring attached to the left side of the breech block. But not everyone got the new equipment right off, and it took a little while to get all the new weapons and regulations out to the troops. IIRC, the infantry at the Fetterman massacre still had rifle muskets. Only the civilians had repeaters. |

They look like very nice figures and probably as good as the Confederate box released earlier. My only gripe and it is a small one is there arnt enough command figures included .I think at least another command sprue would have made the contents even better. |

Just another thought. Will this mean that the original box of ACW infantry will now be phased out ? There seems little point in keeping it in production now with the newer boxes of Confederate and now Union being far superior . |

For those needing extra command sprues, Perrys will probably be selling those separately on their own. As for the original ACW infantry box, I do not see particular point in phasing it out, if the moulds are still in good condition. Some part of the customer base probably still finds those figures of interest. Another issue is whether they will at some point do a new version of their ACW battle in a box set. |

I do still like the originalbox, especially the marching pose and will be ordering more. There was a hint of another plastic union box at some point, frock coat types were mentioned, would be great for the iron brigade. |

I quite like the old box, myself. Certainly not a bad set, at any rate. |

Not a fan of plastic. I will wait for them to release more metal sets. |

Thinking more, the original ACW infantry box might also appeal to those gamers who do not want to do much assembly work for their figures, since most of the figures are moulded as a single piece item, except for the headgear – and for the rest, you only need to glue in one part more (except for the drummer, where you also need to assemble and glue on the drum that is in two parts). For those who enjoy assembling plastics and want to have more freedom, the newer infantry kits are likely to be more attractive choice. |

Taken a chance on a box as they look pretty good. Plus the fact my Perry Zouaves will have some company, as at the moment they are the only ones at Right Shoulder Shift in my collection of Perry plastics and metal! |
