I was just reading through The Return of the King yesterday and I noted something I had not caught before. Pippin's mail hauberk of the Tower Guard was made of Black steal links. I am just curious how does one make chain mail black? How does it get that color? Thanks |

Blackening steel (and other metal) helps to protect it from rust. The traditional method is heating the metal and giving it an oil bath. -Will |

I own a hauberk and do a fair amount of reenacting. To be honest, often times I feel mail is viewed too frequently as silver. Old mail, even well cared for and rust free, is very often dark and almost black even without actual blackening. Also, Weta Workshop used a lot of plastic PVC mail for the principle characters in that movie. They could clip the links together quickly, and the armor was obviously much lighter. YouTube link |

Good point Kraken; mine got pretty dark over the years. |
