I mainly know this French aristocratic officer as a division commander in Taylor's Confederate army at Sabine Pass. He returned home and fought as a division CO for the French army during the Franco-Prussian War. But I can't find his name on any order of battle that I have. Most of the detailed ones are from the Imperial phase. Does anyone know what army or corps he served in? Thanks in advance. |

According to the entry in Warner's "Generals in Gray", Camille Armand Jules Marie, Prince de Polignac (1832-1913) was the son of the president of King Charles X's council of ministers. He entered the French Army in 1853 and served in the Crimea with the 4th Hussars. Leaving the French army in 1859 he travelled to Central America and offered his services to the Confederacy on the outbreak of war. He served on Beauregard's and Bragg's staff. Made brigadier general in 1863 and major general in 1864. In March 1865 he was sent to France to secure the French intervention, but the war ended before he arrived and he went to Spain. He returned to France for the Republican phase of the Franco-Prussian War, earning the Legion d'Honeur. After the war he was a mathematician. When he died in 1913 it marked the passing of the last Confederate Major general. |

In March 1865 he was sent to France to secure the French intervention, but the war ended before he arrived and he went to Spain Yeah, nothing like being sent to secure an alliance when your side is clearly on its last legs. Since France hadn't intervened before the odds of them intervening in 1865 were zero. Napoleon IIIrd wasn't stupid. |
