An 18th Century recipe for wargamers. Not all our wargaming food need be fast and fattening. Some can be slow and fattening. If you have not seen it, check out the Youtube channel of Jas Townsend & Sons – 19th C reenactment cookery. I have been trying some of his recipes and this is my go at Pork a la Normand. link

Canadian fresh rats.Egg and bacon sangies, beat those grim MRE packs the Deutscher kiddies would trade for a litre o' their daddies beer.Things don't change much in that job. |

When I return from a reenactment Mrs. the Greater has but one rule: no pork products for dinner. We try to eat authentically at events, and in the American Civil War that entails lots of pork. |

Everyone knows Those People get better rations. It's a fact of warfare. The MREs were light and portable, and even the dehydrated beef patty wasn't so bad if you could find some coffee to rehydrate it with. But I do miss C Rats. Ham and eggs. John Wayne bars. Pound cake. Somehow nostalgia doesn't provide some of the things I'd like to see again. |

If the army cook isn't good enough, the army may well find itself crawling away from the table on it's stomach… ;-) |

An Army marches on its stomach, but not too far or they will get Tummy Bunions. Attributed to N. Bonaparte, c. 1968. |

Were there any famous military cooks? Long John Silver, a ship's cook, was pretty famous for his Plum Duff. Were there any other famous military cooks? |

Yes, I liked the MREs more so than most of the C-Rats. The Cans were a particular problem. You either had to carry them once the contents were consumed. Or you risked giving the enemy some intel or components that could be use for booby traps[IEDs]. However the John Wayne bars were pretty good. But didn't do well in extreme heat. But I've had MRE Beef Stew, frozen too … |
