So I'm sitting here sculpting with The Glitch Mob blasting out (and yells of: "Turn it down, we're trying to watch Survivor here!" coming from the next room), and I got wondering, what music are you (were you last) painting/whatever to?

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP05 Oct 2016 6:25 p.m. PST

Usually Jazz classics, sometimes old progressive rock concerts.

Winston Smith05 Oct 2016 6:41 p.m. PST

Well, it depends on the army. Poledouris' Conan soundtrack or Goldman's 13th Warrior for fantasy, Williams' Star Wars for SF, Goldman's The Wind and the Lion for colonials (except for Zulu, naturally) Miklos Roscza for Ancients and Medievals, and then it's mostly marches of the appropriate nation, with the Fife and Drums of Colonial Williamsburg covering most of the 18th Century.

What? There's another way?

cavcrazy05 Oct 2016 6:53 p.m. PST

Everything from Steely Dan to Garth Brooks, Harry Chapin, Dianna Krall, and Eric Clapton. Earlier while painting I was listening to the Foo Fighters

I just hit "shuffle." the iPod has over 13,000 songs at this point and it covers quite a bit of ground….

FABET0105 Oct 2016 7:11 p.m. PST

Soundtrack for Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Rings
Soundtrack for Heavy Metal
Soundtrack for Barry Lyndon
Vivaldi's Four Seasons
Led Zeppelin

Buck21505 Oct 2016 7:12 p.m. PST

I just put my iPod on "Shuffle" and get everything from Gerry Rafferty to Godsmack, Stone Sour, Alison Moyet, Jennifer Rush, Kate Bush, Marilyn Manson, Rush, Burn the Priest, Lamb of God, Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, The Pretty Reckless, Santigold, and Vicci Martinez. Very diverse, eclectic, relaxing and allows me to concentrate on my painting…

Wackmole905 Oct 2016 7:29 p.m. PST

I am usually watching something (or at least listening to it). Soccer and Hockey are my favorite choices or old movies that I have seen a ton of times.

Anything and everything! It doesn't have to be relevant, altho' sometimes I will choose a "theme" for an afternoon or evening. But chez moi, it could be anything from classic rock n roll to C&W, jazz, classical, World, folk, local, international, martial, soundtracks -- the sky's the limit.

grenadier corporal05 Oct 2016 11:07 p.m. PST

I am in Napoleonics only and I enjoy listening to classical music (Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and the like) and to military music (CDs and Youtube, especially British).
It is part of the fun, the combination gives me deep satisfaction.

Chuckaroobob05 Oct 2016 11:09 p.m. PST

Cheap Trick's Greatest Hits.
Although I should point out the cd has been in there for a month, the frickin player won't eject! Ready to get a little more variety.

rvandusen Supporting Member of TMP06 Oct 2016 3:43 a.m. PST

Sometimes I listen to a podcast, but other times I will listen to my random taste in music – punk, post-punk, metal, J-pop, classic rock, old country, martial industrial, neo-folk, etc etc etc. Whatever strikes me at the time.

rvandusen Supporting Member of TMP06 Oct 2016 3:50 a.m. PST

"Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex" Yes! I listen to "Inner Universe" quite often. I was sad to learn that Origa passed away last year.

Another anime-related artist that I love is KOKIA.

Audio books, yes, that's a good pick, something I often overlook, but I love my collection of Tolkien, esp. The Silmarillion on CD.

Silurian06 Oct 2016 5:46 p.m. PST

Tonight it's "Onward" by Hawkwind.

GARS190026 Nov 2016 6:36 a.m. PST

Musically, Botho Lukas Chor, power metal (like Sabaton) or the Witcher 3 soundtrack when painting fantasy/ Renaissance. For steampunk/WW1, I tend to prefer some soundtrack, such as Atlantis the Lost Empire or the Mummy films. Something pulpy, y'know?

One should not ignore audiobooks either. I recommend C.S. Lewis, N.T. Wright and Lois McMaster Bujold.

Whatever our principal community broadcaster, 3D Radio, happens to be playing at the time:;invariably independent/alternative, almost always musically interesting, and often difficult (or at least challenging) listening.
