Which one do you feel is his best work? |
DesertScrb | 03 Oct 2016 1:08 p.m. PST |
The Mote in God's Eye with Larry Niven. |
Ghostrunner | 03 Oct 2016 1:09 p.m. PST |
Footfall… but you definitely have to read it as though you are reading it in 1985-ish. |
Rich Bliss | 03 Oct 2016 1:09 p.m. PST |
Mote. No question. It's arguably one of the best SF novels of all time. |
Shadyt | 03 Oct 2016 1:21 p.m. PST |
Lucifer's Hammer. I did not like Mote all that much, I did like all of his other books. |
Oberlindes Sol LIC | 03 Oct 2016 1:22 p.m. PST |
The Mote in God's Eye, definitely -- well, at least it's the best of his novels that I have read, but I'm sure that I haven't read all of them. |
Covert Walrus | 03 Oct 2016 1:22 p.m. PST |
"Falkenberg's Legion" for my money. |
Irish Marine | 03 Oct 2016 1:53 p.m. PST |
|
Winston Smith | 03 Oct 2016 2:02 p.m. PST |
I met him once. Then and there I resolved to never read or buy any of his books. |

Oath of Fealty. But there are days I think Niven, Pournelle and Niven & Pournelle are three authors, in which case The Mercenary. Winston, considering the person instead of purely the book can be a mistake. I have a number of excellent novels on my shelves by people who were less satisfactory. Non-fiction is somewhat different, I admit. But great art remains great art regardless of the source. |

Another vote for The Mote in God's Eye. Matter of fact, now I have to go get a copy and re-read it….. |

@robert piepenbrink There are plenty of other books out there. I see no need to subsidize someone who….. It's not like he's great literature, for which I must make excuses. |
SgtPain | 03 Oct 2016 6:12 p.m. PST |
Janissaries series is my personal favorite. |
Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut | 03 Oct 2016 6:13 p.m. PST |
Mote or Footfall, but they were both with Niven. Birth Of Fire, as a stand-alone |
Stryderg | 03 Oct 2016 6:24 p.m. PST |
Maybe not his best, but I liked "Go Tell the Spartans" and "King David's Spaceship". Heck, I like pretty much all of his stuff, especially the War World series. Almost a shame that the Soviet Union broke up so he lost interest in his CoDominium. |

I've never gotten through any of his solo works, but I'd second the vote for "Lucifer's Hammer" written with Larry Niven. A crackling good read. |
Wolfshanza | 03 Oct 2016 11:09 p.m. PST |
Yep, liked Footfall, Mote and the CoDo books. |
Cerdic | 03 Oct 2016 11:28 p.m. PST |
I'll have to tick the 'never heard of him' option. |

Three thumbs-up for Mote. |

King David's Spaceship was my favourite. My least Favourite was the Mote in Murcheson's Eye. All I could think was that Mrs Pournelle wanted a new lounge suite so he knocked out a crappy novel in an afternoon to pay for it. |

The Mote in God's Eye for with Larry Niven. |

I can't remember reading *any* of his novels. but I thoroughly enjoyed reading his Chaos Manor column in Byte magazine. Fond memories of Golem, Lucy, Cheetah, and, well, memory fails…. |
chromedog | 05 Oct 2016 4:09 a.m. PST |
Falkenberg's legion for me. I like Niven's stuff, and some of their co-written stuff, but I prefer the solo efforts of both to their co-authoring. |
CeruLucifus | 05 Oct 2016 6:24 a.m. PST |
Mote in God's Eye with Niven. His solo works didn't really stay with me. I too fondly remember his Byte magazine articles. "The View from Chaos Manor" now carries on as Mr. Pournelle's viewpoint blog. His views on policy are defensible and thoughtful and he knows how to back them up with some science, but there is a lot of opinion as well. He also runs a continuation of the Byte column as Chaos Manor Reviews: chaosmanorreviews.com |
