So I've started reading the English translation of Englunds Poltova book. The introduction is by what i assume os the translater/editor of the English version. It mention that that last shot fired in anger by Sweden was in 1813 against Napoleon. Which mean the whole Norwegian-Swedish war was just a lot of happy shooting and dying. The swedish muskets probably fired soap bubbles. |

That's the standard Swedish propaganda, as promulgated in their schools. Heck, I once met a Swedish college student who had been taught that Sweden had not been in any wars since the Great Northern War! He was shocked to find out he'd been lied to. |

Based on the Norwegian casualties compared to Swedish in the Norwegian-Swedish War the Swedes may as well have been firing soap bubbles! Interesting war – given their combat record if I was a Swedish history teacher I would lie about it too |

Right on! I remember researching the 1814 Norwegian War and trying to get an answer on books out of various antikvariats in Sweden was "What war in 1814? We didn't attack anyone after the Hat War!" Sweden is a great country but the 'kumbaya' society leaves a bit to be desired! :) |

Am I right that the "recent" military history (or lack of it) of Sweden more reflects an accident of geography and terrain challenge than a pacifist, muesli eating, nature? It helps if you do not open onto the North Sea with easy Atlantic access, you have "Gallant little" Finland between you and the Russian bear. Then you are also sensible enough to reach accommodations with any European power that is currently dominant and trade accordingly. Saab Viggens and more modern aircraft, in powerful armed forces, do not hurt either………self defence is big in Sweden. Given the chance, Norway would have been exactly the same (as would Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark etc, but they were all in the wrong place at the wrong time) Anyone seen "1864"? Not bad…….. But "Occupied"….outstanding…incredible….second series announced today I am told. |

Sweden 's 1814 losses were low because Bernadotte. |

There's a lot of trees to hug in Sweden – perhaps when they've done them all, the Swedes will become aggressive again? |
