Hello,
Besides San Juan Hill, what are some other engagements that can be researched during the Spanish American/Philippine Insurrection. My emphasis is tactics and strategy.
Thank you

For the Phillipines, Brian M. Lynn's account _The Phillipines War, 1899-1902_ is hard to beat for granularity.

The Puerto Rico campaign gets far less attention than the Cuban. The battles of Como and Aibonito might interest you.

I second Linn's book, well written and exhaustively researched.

The battles of Manila, between the Americans and Spanish and later Americans and Filipinos are fascinating battles. The Filipino attack is particularly interesting: the Americans dealt with infiltrators in the rear area while simultaneously attacking across their whole front agains the Filipino fortifications around the city.

Not entirely tangential to your project, the resulting Moro Wars on Mindanao provide all manner of gaming opportunities, both land and sea.

Several nasty historical engagements, and any number of possible games of a "What if?" variety.

Most of the same US miniatures will work, though Moro's will certainly be required, rather than Spanish and Insurecto's.

You might want to look at these links for ideas and gaming accessories, not to mention a dedicated rules set.

Another area for research is Escario's march to Santago. It's Spanish vs. Cubans. I've run it as a mini campaign with three encounters on a single 4x8 table.

1) Cuban attack on the Spanish column on the march.

2) Spanish river crossing.

3) Spanish attack on a fortified village.

Are you also interested in the Philippine Revolution before the US gets involved? I'd have thought that might be relevant if only for how Spanish tactics might have developed before the SAW started.

(Myself, I'm interested because there was at least one really big battle.)

I personally am leaning towards a campaign in Puerto Rico, although the amount of written works dealing on PR is rather low.

Col Durnford03 Oct 2016 6:19 a.m. PST

I've had the PR campaign on the back burner for years.

The Spanish have some really good options to cause the U.S. a lot of trouble. Aggressively played, they could take out one or two of the four columns.
