I was reading a thread here on TMP about someone needing help with their "Matt Varnish" drying badly. Chuckled to myself and thought the title would make a great character name for a wargame. I don't normally name the figs but own the whole series of the old Victory Games "Ambush" modules. There was a spot on the Squad sheet for a name as well as weapons and gear. Anyway this got me thinking that we could have some fun with this: Mat Varnish Val Lejo A. Cryllic D. Sicks |

Vic Trix Connie Seur Henry "Big" Sticks, the Bouncer and his friend "Tiny" Ross Carter Bachs Windsor Newton (Sort of a posh name: probably an officer.) Art Fixx Stokes Mortar Trilby "Hat" Revell and the sutler Constant Bacon. But that one's cheating: there was such a person in the War of 1812. (There is also, in US financial history, one Preserved Fish, who sadly had no connection to supply. But we could fix that.) There ought to be something with Italeri, but it just won't come. How could this work as a poll, by the way? |

I remember Dick Bryant and pals had some great character names for an ancient campaign written up in the "Courier" back in the 70s. I remember generals named Gluteus Maximus and Sexto Hermaphrodite. |

Your PostApock army would have to have a General Anarchy, and Private Doomsday. As to actual names of real soldiers, at Historicon I tried to talk Sash and Saber's Chris Hughes into doing some FIW personalities, including the British Army's Major Herman Munster. |

I'm surprised that none of the suggestions so far have been "bleeped out"… I can remember a number that would have been. |

How could this work as a poll, by the way? How frequently do you use pun/funny names for characters in your wargaming scenarios? I use them about half the time. My favourite (the one I am most proud of) is a librarian NPC who is the curator of Medieval European religious architectural collections (a knowledge base than can come in useful to intrepid investigators of the occult) … Norman Church. |

I once had an NPC named Raj Egorats. The name was inspired by seeing a certain box in a mirror. |

We usually don't get too silly, but a ww2 skirmish campaign had Sergeant Colt SteelFist, all-american hero. |

I had an assassin named "Le har via oz" also called "Wald" |

Our Old West campaigns feature the noted French Canadian trapper and explorer, Pierre Frontage. He's got roads named for him all over North America! Also the old prospector Coot Gibson. Folks around town figure Coot's about half crazy. They're about half right. |
