While doing some homework on the WW2 A/S campaign, I re-acquainted myself with a really great book that had been lingering on my bookshelf for years. It deserves to be brought to the attention of people who may not be familiar with it.

People interested in gaining a good grasp of the struggle between Coastal Command and the U-boats will greatly benefit from obtaining a copy of "I-Boats in the Bay of Biscay – an Essay in Operations Analysis" by Brian McCue. Quite apart from his statistical analysis, author McCue provides invaluable (calendar-denominated) detail not only on the continuously evolving radar versus detector technology competition waged by the two opponents but also great insights into how the tactics of both sides changed in response to technology advances.

Basically a very good "one-stop shop" if you are interested in this topic. Highly recommended.

Dave –
Yes indeed ….. should read as "U-Boats in the Bay of Biscay – an Essay in Operations Analysis".

I don't think IJN I-boats commonly ventured into the Bay of Biscay ….. ;-)

Maybe the I-boats were really really good at hiding.

The technology has continued to advance even in the post-war years. Just look at the innovations in the new I-Boat 7, as summed up by Sea-NET: Improved front and rear cameras -- now with optical image stabilization -- deliver much improved photos, especially in low light. Water resistant. A faster processor, plus better battery life. More onboard storage than last year's models for the same price.

Sounds like exactly what the I-Boats needed!
