I have always liked those early Italians. They have a look that screams exoticism on the gladius edge of barbarism or decadence.
That said I do prefer my Samnites with scutums( scuta?).

Aventine make Italian scuta which you could swap for the hoplons.

Great looking figures. Will go well with the new Samnite infantry released by Victrix.

Finally! They will have to be made a couple years ago, but Aventine, wanted to work the competitors.

Wow! Those are impressive, and are probably going to cost me some money! Thanks Tango.

I saw these a few days ago, agree great figures! I have some Crusader and A&A Samnites already, would be happy to add more to the mix…

Very nice, worth waiting for. I love the horse armour and the standard. Hi Mike!

Yes, crazyivanov, as somebody affirmed above, the plural of scutum is scuta (any neuter noun, many of which end in -um, is -a in the plural, e.g., pilum, pila)

The same actually goes for hoplon too. The -on is a Greek neuter and its plural is also -a, which shows how close these two sister languages are to each other. So hopla is the actual plural, though realistically no one will use it or probably care that much.

By the way, I've seen the depictions in paintings of those round shields, but are they really as big as the hoplite hoplon or are they scaled down? I've always thought that a full-sized hoplon would be a bit much for a mounted warrior.

I was thinking I'll probably pop a slightly smaller shield on mine, too.

I think Aventine have a range of smaller shields, and are usually happy to swap around. They have a smaller rimmed pelte for their phalanx men that may suit.

Glad you like them too boys!. (smile)

Samnite cavalry were mostly shieldless until contact with Tarentines, I think, so the round shields are probably more Tarentine size, weighted for cavalry.
A mix of armoured and un armoured (nobles?) close order cavalry.
