"Eclipsed by Islamic State, al-Qaeda may be making a comeback in a more pragmatic, and dangerous, form. SOON after it attacked America on September 11th 2001, al-Qaeda issued a book by its co-founder, Ayman al-Zawahiri, setting out a grand strategy. "Knights under the Prophet's Banner" explained that striking America, not local regimes, would galvanise Muslims everywhere; jihadists had to cleave "to the masses" and needed a "base in the heart of the Muslim world" to achieve eventual success. In the event, al-Qaeda was chased from Afghanistan and dispersed by American forces, which eventually killed its leader, Osama bin Laden. In Iraq, the jihadists were nearly wiped out as the masses turned against them, for a time. And with the subsequent collapse of Syria and Iraq, al-Qaeda was eclipsed by its rebellious progeny, Islamic State (IS), which declared a caliphate in 2014 and has inspired jihadists—and earned the enmity of everyone else—ever since…" link Main page link Amicalement Armand |

Al-Qaeda is a much better model for a terrorist group. Don't have a base and supply the information to other potential terrorists on what to do. |

And AQ has proven to be much less effective, especially after 9/11. And as we see as big a threat as Daesh. But none-the-less, they should be "terminated with extreme prejudice" … as the saying goes … |

There is a bigger more long term problem that has to due with their poisonous ideology. Not politically correct to even name what it is but we all know what it is. This problem is not going away anytime soon, even if the self named Islamic State is utterly destroyed. The ideology will morth into new terror groups in the future. It's an ideology that is violently opposed to people who believe differently than they do. |

Well people can make up their own minds as to the effectiveness of A-Q Regardless … they should be "terminated with extreme prejudice". And had the US not decided to support the Muj against the USSR. UBL and his associates would most likely have been killed by Russian ordinance, etc., … But again hindsight is 20/20 … @ USAFpilot … |

Not politically correct to even name what it is but we all know what it is. No we don't – and indeed a lot of people who think they know what it is don't have a clue. As you say, self named Islamic state is what they choose to call themselves. As is the Lords Resistance army Originally known as the United Holy Salvation Army and Uganda Christian Army/Movement, its stated goals include establishment of multi-party democracy, ruling Uganda according to the Ten Commandments, and Acholi nationalism, though in practice "the LRA is not motivated by any identifiable political agenda, and its military strategy and tactics reflect this" Thus fulfilling the rule that anyone can say the Moon is made of green cheese. |
