Just watched a Youtube video of gaming somewhere in Greece. Many of the players were puffing away while gaming. In today's world of "no smoking", do you allow smoking in your games? |

I have played at houses where it happens, but strangely as an ex smoker, my lungs seize up around it, and it is hard for me to stay in smokey rooms. I have to pass on those environments. My house is a non smoking (inside) place, and I host a fair amount, so when here, then it is a no go. I am generous in giving my nicotine dependent friends a chance to go outside once in a while though. |

Depends. Outdoor garden game, sure. Inside, probably not, unless we're in a designated smoking parlour. Retiring to a porch or patio after the game? Sure. |

If my wife allowed me to smoke a pipe indoors, I would indeed smoke while gaming. |

My friends that smoke usually go outside. I'm not a smoker but it doesn't bother me. Actually one time it really helped me out. In a game of Warmaster I was playing my chaos army against ocs. My big gambit had failed to come off, my knights whiffed and the intended attack on an orc brigade just totally failed. His turn saw me forced back on my supports and I was intending a push up the center to just throw my toughest stuff in to maybe smash up a brigade or two and possibly win by destroying his center. It was a risky move but it might have worked. Odds were pretty even. My opponent went to have a smoke to celebrate, or maybe it was just time.
So I was waiting to take my turn while he was smoking and as I was looking at the table I saw a new strategy. He had a brigade of goblins in reserve and I noticed that my knights might have enough move, if they were able to get two orders, to hit them in the flank. If I re-positioned the rest of my force, shifting it to the right I could then take whatever he threw at me the next turn and counter attack his right. When he came back down my first move was to throw the cavalry forward, they made their two orders, hit the goblin brigade in the flank. The rest of my army moved back out of his initiative range and to the right. In the combat phase the goblin unit was almost wiped out with my cavalry losing no stands. They lost three units there and another unit was left hanging, although they could have charge me in the rear on initiative it probably wouldn't have done him much good. Even though they were only goblins it was still three units to his break point. He tried to charge forward with his line on the next turn, a few units made it but not enough to make a substantial dent. The right of his army moved to threaten my flank but too slowly to really be a real threat. His goblins did charge on an order. They won the combat getting 9 attacks to 3 on the flank of the knights. I don't remember how many hits they got but it wasn't enough to take out a stand. So then I charged. Much of his left was in initiative range. My cavalry moved to the rear of one of the brigades while the rest of the force charged the front. One entire brigade was destroyed and another one lost two units to me only losing one unit. That was 9 units he had lost in a turn. He was only two units away from break point. His charge in the next turn finished him off. So smoking was a good thing for me in that game. |

Used to then quit in '94 It was a bad thing for those who didnt Especially in closed venues. Would nevef do it now |

Not in my house. I would not normally patronize a store where smoking was rife (not even sure there is a state where that is legal). I don't begrudge smokers provided I don't have to endure second hand smoke which stuffs my sinuses, fouls my clothes and demonstrably endangers my health. Duck outside for a puff and I could care less. |

The group I game with most often includes a couple pipe smokers, a couple cigar smokers, and a few non-smokers. The moderate consumption of fine tobacco is encouraged, but not required. |

I think it's pretty much accepted that you don't smoke indoors in someone else's house and, in UK, public indoor spaces are no- smoking anyway. We have one or two smokers in our club and they always go outside for their fix. |

I certainly would not object but no one seems to wish to smoke during a game. x42 |

As a smoker, I go outside, always. It would be rude to smoke indoors at almost any US venue. |

No, we take breaks and I have an area outside the home for smokers. |
Giles the Zog | 25 Sep 2016 12:32 p.m. PST |
NO. I've never had to express this, as the few smokers who attend my games voluntarily go outside. Once or twice a smoker has smoked inside my house at my consent (and other guests) (it was rough weather), but was polite enough to blow the smoke out the bay window, and that was only after the game and we were busy having a curry and drinks so we had plenty of other fumes ! As we now have kids turning up at some of our games, it would be a definite NO. |

A observation in general, smoking has dropped off immensely in the US, but heard in some countries it hasn't. |

Not much demand for it these days … Back before I quit and when it was permitted, I didn't smoke at the wargame table as a courtesy anyway … Phil |

Great for tabletop battlefield black powder smoke effects though. It could also add immeasurably to the realism of game photography. |

No, some smokers will take it outdoors, another vapes. I would not choose to attend a game where I knew there would be indoor smoking. I grew up as a non-smoker surrounded by smoking and cannot stand the smell |

You can't smoke at the club. I won't left people smoke in my house. If I go to someone else's house it is up to them. I have noticed that some games are a bit slower when an opponent who is a smoker goes outside every 30 minutes for a fag. But then again, sometimes the break is welcomed. Cheers, JohnG |

I never minded. Once I had a person who for valid medical reasons it bothered intensely, and I asked the smokers to tone it down. They did and all was fine. I don't mind now. I game in a 16 by 34 ft living room with floor to ceiling windows on three complete sides (the walls are all windows from floor to cathedral ceiling. I open them up and you have to tack down the chatchkes on the end tables. However no one smokes any more |

Considering the prevalence of smoking in the military for every conflict from sometime in the 17th century at least through Vietnam, it should probably be compulsory for wargamers on grounds of authentic period "atmosphere." Not that I smoke anymore myself, but I can remember a time when you had to cut a pathway through the smoke in a barracks. |
