This is an interesting little article.

Hadn't heard about this before, but appears we have a squadron of Mig-29s:

Seems like they'd be great for Red Flag and Topgun exercises, but spare parts availability might be an issue. Then again, the Russians do seem to be embracing capitalism.

Wish they'd buy a bunch of those big, beautiful Sukhois.

I like the picture of that Polish MiG-29 with the big emblem on it.

I think it's the Kosciuszko emblem as worn on 303 Squadron RAF machines in WW2.

Wish they'd buy a bunch of those big, beautiful Sukhois.

Not sure they could get those OEM! grin

You'd be surprised what we have acquired since the wall came down…

MIG-29s to Iran…can't have that, no way.

Nukes, no problem. It's a funny world nowadays.

Mako1125 Sep 2016 11:56 a.m. PST

Perhaps, some cheap, Chinese knockoffs for the Sukhois would do.

Not really, Don.

The author starts off with a lot of hyperbole. It's been well known that the US acquired the Moldovan fighters for at least a decade. And, as has been noted elsewhere, the Germans offered to give us the former East German '29s to us for free.

If someone had read the article, they would have noted that the Moldovan 29s were nuclear-capable – and that's the primary reason for grabbing these.

VVV reply, they don't rust, that's iron oxide.

Sorry, RAF corrosion training kicking back in, aircraft don't rust they corrode. The best way to upset the instructors was to call it rust.

I understand the concern about Iran, as for knowledge part there was a time when my office manager was a former DDR officer, trained in Russia to service their Mig-29…and I guess these planes in Germany were in better shape that those in Moldavia.

Wasn't much of a secret given most aviation enthusiasts have known about it for most of this century! :D

USAF had MiG's and Sukhoy's for long time
