…In Afghanistan. "Abdul Hakim seems to have just vanished. The 15-year-old boy left his madrasa across the Pakistani border to visit relatives in Afghanistan. But since crossing into Helmand province on his way to meet his parents in Bolan, a suburb of bustling shops outside the provincial capital, nobody has heard from him. The list of evils that could have befallen Abdul Hakim on his way home is long. In late July, the Taliban launched a series of attacks in Helmand and have since gobbled up territory across Afghanistan's beleaguered southern province. Districts that for years were safe have now been seized by militants or are being ravaged in front-line fighting. Roaring airplanes, Afghan and American, drop bombs almost every night, causing casualties that are rarely publicized. "There is no security. Our children are being killed," says Habibullah, an elder from Abdul Hakim's family…" More here link Amicalement Armand |

They will be the "winners" in this conflict. Which means all the tribes, etc., will go on killing each other as it has been for centuries. And the West and East has to understand … there is nothing that can be effectively done. And many Nations will be sending aid in all forms to help the "innocent". Just as it has been doing since I was very young. But there still will be no real peace … |

And the West and East has to understand … there is nothing that can be effectively done. Ah the Homer Simpson version of life "Kids, you tried your best and you failed miserably. The lesson is, never try." |

VVV – Legion is right on this one. You might wish to consider:
God grant us the serenity to accept the things we cannot change, the courage to change the things we can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Emphasis on "the wisdom to know the difference." I expect you assume you will not be personally paying the cost of trying to cure the Afghans of their deplorable culture. A lot of people have already died trying to do this. How many more do you think should die to make it happen? A few thousand? A few million? If you're not willing to die yourself, then you're not serious. So again, Legion is right. |

If you're not willing to die yourself, then you're not serious. Indeed I suppose I was willing to die, by serving in the British army. But I prefer Gen Pattons view: "The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." So I would say that people who advocate dying for their country are stupid. And I would say that the difference between success and failure is to have a good plan. |

I thought that's the Charlie Brown football moral lesson, as taught by his sister. Many leaders seem to have forgotten Patton's view. I agree with his tactics as well. The real issue is the "will" and commitment to win. All other issues are secondary. |

Didn't some Prussian general say something along the lines that no plan survives first contact with the enemy no matter how good it is. Patton even says that technology will change but it is the "will" to win which is most important. |

If you're not willing to die yourself, then you're not serious. So again, Legion is right. It's rare but Begemot and I agree. And vvv he was an Infantry Officer too. So I think in this case … "we get it" … Ah the Homer Simpson version of life Well that is a first … someone comparing me to a Simpson … DOH !!!! I'd prefer … Race Bannon from Jonny Quest … "The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his." We always thought that in any unit I served in. In all 4 Inf Bns I was assigned. So I would say that people who advocate dying for their country are stupid. No one wants to die for his country or otherwise. Unless to are a jihadi type … But as we are "historians" to one level or another. And some Vets … In a conflict this may happen … As I said on another thread … Don't Get Captured … Don't Compromise Intel … Don't Get Any Friendlies Killed. All with the backdrop of getting the mission accomplished. So it may seem to some that the ranking leader is in a no win situation. And maybe sometimes he is ? |
