Okay, I really like these: link And with the drop in the pound, I think I want to buy some of them! Now, I know I can use them for the Battle of Mentana (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Mentana), but is there a good source or two, in English, that covers the uniforms and the organization, of the Papal forces circa 1867, along with their Garabaldi opponents? Is this conflict covered in any of the old booklets that were published by FreiKorps back in the day? If so, does someone have one they want to part with? The size of the battle appeals to me, my Roman Catholic side says "do Papal", and my Irish heritage says "yes, Irish volunteers!" So, help me get started! Thanks in advance! |

Freikorps published a booklet called Red shirts that is pretty invaluable in terms of organization, equipment and uniforms. I put together armies for the Battle of Mentana in 10mm (unfortunately only half painted, need to resume that project). You can find some resources on the web but Casali's Red Shirts book is what I used for the bulk of my guide. |

Casali's Red Shirt book is a great resource but it covers 1860. Mentana was 1867. I've done a fair amount of research on the battle. If you contact me at Burker1 (at) aol (dot) com I'd be happy to share it with you. By the way, the San Patricio battalion was disbanded in 1861 (IIRC) but about 50 Irishmen stayed in Rome and became the 5th (?) company of the Papal Zouaves. |

Email sent, Robert! I would still think Red Shirts might be useful for the Garabaldini though, yes, even though Mentana is after the Third War of Independence? Darryl |
