Okay, the title is a little misleading -- I haven't actually gotten this made yet because I'm still trying to figure out how to get this from Sketchup to an SVG or EPS file, and then I have to figure out where to get it made (besides Ponoko, which has one of the worst-organized websites known to modern man). But still, this project should work once I get it cut and assembled! I recently succumbed to the temptation to get back into Warhammer 40K, a game I haven't played since George H. W. Bush was president (seriously, I'm not kidding). Really, it was a combination of "Gee, all my friends are playing it" and "Wow, here's a garage sale that has a small fortune of Orks for a pittance." Orks have been my favorite race since I first cracked open Rogue Trader back in the dim days of 1988, and I still love them for the sheer breadth of scratchbuilding possibilities they represent.

Very , Very Orky Javelin… Kudos Would look superb next to my ( if it were to be made in 15mm ) ork scratchbuilds. Can they be cut in thin/thick card so as to be scaled to 15mm ? See my ork builds… link Z |

Javelin, I can't think of its name for the life of me, but I know there's an online program somewhere that converts a 3D file into laser cut 'slices', complete with connectors. All you have to do is specify the thickness of your material, and it does the rest. You might want to interrogate the community at Thingiverse, or see if there's a FabLab near you for more info. If I think of the program's name, I'll get back to you. |

Don't think sketchup will convent to SVG. You would need to do the various piece of the design in a vector art program (inksplash, corel draw serif drawplus). for example The feet would be made up of several rings stack on top of each other. to save lasing time would do the exhaust stack & arm rams in pplasticard tubes & rods. With the gattling gun you would need to leave around 0.75-1mm gap between barrels or the bit in middle would fall out. Regards MMG. |

@Zrunelord: Yes, in Sketchup I can easily scale the model up or down. I figure for 15mm, I'll scale it down to 50%, which will then make the individual slices 3mm thick, or roughly 1/8". @MacrossMartin: Thanks! I'll check out those sources to see what I can find. @MMG: Thanks for the insight! I'm trying to figure out how to use Inkscape for the vector drawing, but what I find to be the problem is making sure the measurements are exact. What software do you use for your lasering? On the feet, that's exactly what I did:

I use serif drawplus x5, I got it when was on sale for £10.00 GBP, the newer version (drawplus X8) is more expensive, but if you ask Serif they might have a deal on (be warned they will bug you about offers). There is a free starter version but not sure which bits are switched off in it, but the basic drawing bits are active. With designing a template, I use square/rectangles (that have a colour then isn't going to be cut) to get the correct alignment/distance.
Ref the Feet: you can save some fiddliness by have the oblong blocks as part of the circle instead of separate items. Regards MMG. |

Thanks for pointing that out! I had originally gone with a different concept for the feet and those were supposed to help keep the disks lined up. I later changed tack but never did anything with those. I'll have to see if I can find a cheap copy of Drawplus and give it a try. |

That looks awesome. You might have to reinforce the legs of the table that you intend to game on before you set him down to go all stompy on the opponents though. |

Woo hoo! I found a copy of Drawplus 6 on eBay for $16 USD! Now I just hope it's legitimate… |

Make sure its not just the user book or a CD without the key. |
