…the Somme.

"Battle of the Somme, also known as the Somme Offensive, was one of the bloodiest battles in WWI. During the first day alone, 1st July 1916, there were roughly 60,000 casualties.

After one month one million were killed or wounded on both sides. The battle is notable for the importance of air power and the first use of the tank.

During the Battle of the Somme thousands of pictures were taken, but here we present to you 34 chosen ones, including 17 colorized…"

For me colourised photos always make the subject seem more modern and somehow real. Good choice of subjects, nice to see pictures of German soldiers as well.

The coloring on those photos is really good. One photo in particular really stood out to me, the last one.

My great-grandfather was wounded at the Battle of the Somme fighting in the Canadian army, and the mud in that picture looks just like the mud I've had to trudge through when I go duck hunting on reservations. I cannot imagine trying to fight in that kind of mud, as I have a hard enough time spending a couple hours trudging through it for fun!

The fact the picture is colored in really turned a rather standard looking photo into something very much more vivid. Good find, Tango!
