Flames of war using 1/72 scale. When using Heavy artillery such as 122mm or 155mm how do you handle them modelwise? Do you put them on the board as rules suggest? If so what models are you using? Who makes them? |

I never put artillery on the table unless I'm playing with Micro armor and even then I know it's a tad silly… |

I'm in the same camp. In most scales the only thing needed on the table for heavy artillery is the F.O. |

Play all my FOW scenarios using 20mm. The miniature collection predates the rules, which I started playing in 2004. Generally the artillery is off board using the old "Cross the Volga" rules from Stalingrad booklet. Since most games are themed (generally historical background) scenarios and not point or mission based, the artillery placement is somewhat moot… as the platoon count is irrelevant. Example of recent 20mm FOW convention scenario called "Ordeal of the 179th RCT" at Salerno. Third in a series of nine planned Salerno scenarios using FOW and time linked or staged. It used a "transit zone" between the two sector convention tables (6'x6' each, side by side) and allowed the American 105mm field artillery battery to fire into both sectors (base facing). The German artillery was totally off-board. The next planned FOW scenario is "Yellow Beach – Salerno, a hide and seek beach landing scenario of the nighttime landing amidst the roman ruins of Paestum. Scenario soon posted on Wargamerabbit and scheduled to be played at the local HMGS convention next month (Van Nuys CA October 8th). Ordeal of the 179th RCT scenario and the AAR of scenario play. Looks like I'm in the minority, but I put the artillery on board. Although, I do play on a 50% larger table with 50% increased distances (so, 6 ft by 9 ft table) As far as models go, it's a mix of various manufacturers just like my infantry. So far, for artillery I have Plastic Soldier Company, HaT, and Italeri, but there are a lot of manufacturers out there. As always, Plastic Soldier Review is an invaluable resource to find a good fit. |

Arty on the table is fine from retailers point of view but otherwise it is so silly. Yeah, there are some instances where, due to a cockup, arty encountered non-arty enemy units but still… |

I'd put 122mm guns on the table for Russians (in direct fire support), leave the 152s off. Otherwise, I play Flames in 15mm with almost all my artillery off-table. I only bring mortars and infantry guns. |

Generally artillery should be off board. The on board artillery is one of the reasons FOW boards look so weird. Designed to sell miniatures not history. Russians did you some direct fire artillery but in a 1:1 level game even that should be rarely used. If you think of FOW as a platoon level game disguised as a 1:1 game to appease a player base then guns on the table may make some sense. Distorted game scale though causes some odd problems as big guns have shortened ranges. It appears most 20mm players wisely keep the guns off the table. TomT |

Well i have been playimg historically for two yeas now and like wargamerabbit i use over the volgar rules and have kept them off board. That seems fitting and more sensible to me. Someone had suggested that maybe i should put them on board. So….i figured i would give a shout out to see how others in my scale use them. Plus the size of their foot print would leave even lesser room on a 6x4 board. Questioned answered. Continue as i have been. Thanks everyone. |

The only time I want arty on the board is when they're a target, not a firer, as in there's an attack on an arty position. Otherwise, at our scale they just don't fit. |
