I'm working on a Wild West skirmish game for my home club in a few weeks, and realized that I really don't have any mounted figures.

I like the Knuckleduster figures, but they're about $5 USD each. I was looking at the Old Glory Warpaint line and their mounted figures are about $3.50 USD a piece.

I was thinking of buying a pack of the U.S. Cavalry Advancing, but painting them as "Civilians". The pictures were a little blurry, my concern was whether they had sabers or not. They don't seem too, but they may have them on the other side.

Does anyone have know about these guys, are they sabered or not? Would they make passable cowboys if painted thus?

I used to have these figures years ago, and I seem to remember the mounted cavalry having sheathed sabers.

You may want to look at the Texas war of independence line or the west wind cowboy wars line.

Go to Old Gory's Westwind heading and they have cowboy wars, plenty of mounted and dismounted figures for your game.

I did look at the West Wind, but they would run me about $8 USD per figure ($17 for 2 mounted and 2 foot, but I have plenty of foot), I was looking at the Warpaint line because of the significant savings in coin($36 for a group of 10 mounted, or #3.60 each)

Have a look at Boers if you are looking for rifle armed civilians. As mentioned above the TWI range has suitable figures as well.

It may not look as pleasing, but I simply put a poker chip under a foot figure to indicate that the person was mounted. I am afraid there are not cheap alternatives out there as the Dixon mounted cowboys figures run about $5 USD a pop as well. Boers are worth looking at. You might also find some Reb ACW cav in slouch hats sans saber.

So for a merely 14 dollars you are going to buy what for you is second choice ?

79thPA: thank you for the brilliant idea. The simplest solutions allways turn out to be the best.

How many cowboys do you need? I would also say the Westwind cowboy line…its a plus that you get a mounted and dismounted version of the same guy…I think its very useful…

Belgian Ray---to get 10 West Wind Cowboys would be $85 USDas opposed to $36 USD for my second choice Warpaint. That's $50 USD and cuts into my overall project budget noticeably.

79th PA---Our club uses some foam board rectangles with horse shapes painted on them like your poker chips, but I was trying to upgrade to some mounted men getting the most bang for the buck

MC---I do like the Boers. The guy with the bowler hat esp. The Texans are good too.
The Spanish American War and The perishing v s Villa US Cav were also good, except for the bugler

Even though the Knuckleduster are slightly more expensive than the Old Glory Warpaint, I think you would be happier with cowboy miniatures that look like cowboys than the cavalry miniatures you'd have to modify.
