Which song brings out your patriotism? |
robert piepenbrink | 16 Sep 2016 7:56 p.m. PST |
Well, for me it has to be "The British Grenadier" but as an American my opinion may have no weight. |
Winston Smith | 16 Sep 2016 7:57 p.m. PST |
I kind of think that Jerusalem is lovely to listen to. But I'm a Yank. What do I know? |

It would have to be "God Bless America" as an American. If I was British it would be "There will always be an England". |

Isn't there a British patriotic song that uses the tune from "Oben am jungen Rhein"? Grelber B^) Whose national anthem comes from an old British drinking song. |
JCD1964 | 16 Sep 2016 11:22 p.m. PST |
As I am the son and grandson of Londoners who survived the Blitz it has to be "London Pride". Edit: LP is the song referred to above, an English folk song later used by the Germans. |
platypus01au | 16 Sep 2016 11:40 p.m. PST |
As Narratio said above, nobody goes past "Land of Hope and Glory". It is the quintessential British patriotic song. Jerusalem Is indeed a beautiful song, one that makes my skin tingle when I hear it, but it isn't patriotic in the least. It is an Anachist song, and down with the dark, satanic mills! Cheers, JohnG |

Hearts of Oak does it for me… YouTube link Sing along? Come, cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer, To add something more to this wonderful year; To honour we call you, as freemen not slaves, For who are so free as the sons of the waves? Chorus: Heart of Oak are our ships, Jolly Tars are our men, We always are ready: Steady, boys, Steady! We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again. We ne'er see our foes but we wish them to stay, They never see us but they wish us away; If they run, why we follow, and run them ashore, For if they won't fight us, what can we do more? (Chorus) They say they'll invade us these terrible foe, They frighten our women, our children, our beaus, But if should their flat-bottoms, in darkness set oar, Still Britons they'll find to receive them on shore. (Chorus) Britannia triumphant her ships rule the seas, Her watch word is 'Justice' her password is 'Free', So come cheer up my lads, with one heart let us sing, Our soldiers, our sailors, our statesmen, our king[queen]. (Chorus) Enjoy!

You have to remember that Britain is made up from four countries and I'm sure many Welsh, Irish and Scots will have their own favourites. You just need to watch the Six Nations Rugby (Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, France and Italy) series to get a flavour. |

My dad was from West Ham so I think 'London Calling' by The Clash gets my blood up and ready for a barny, but as an Englishman its 'Jerusalem' for a tear in the eye, and for heart swelling pride its our dear old 'God Save ther Queen' belted out at high octaves. "Gawd bless Her" none of this kneeling on one knee when ones anthem is played no matter how much freedom one has, |
Norman D Landings | 17 Sep 2016 9:54 a.m. PST |
Fat Wally nailed it for me- "Swords of a Thousand Men" sums up the kind of jocular, beer-assisted, wake-up-the-next-morning-&-3/4-of-the-globe-is-pink mayhem Britain does best. Nautical: Erich Wolfgang Korngold's "Pull for the Straits of Dover". My favourite north-of-the-border number: "The Road to the Isles". Welsh: "The Minstrel Boy". Irish: "Garryowen. The choice of 'regimentals' is limited, as the OP specifies a song rather than an instrumental. That being the case: "John Peel". Local choice: "The Keel Row". |

@AussieAndy Your Scottish blood possibly doesn't reach some of your brain cells in that the vast majority of Scots are Sassenachs which is gaelic for Saxons but applied by a Highlander to anyone not born in the Highlands. I'm as Scottish as you like, I wear the kilt and I'm a Sassenach. |
Guthroth | 18 Sep 2016 5:45 a.m. PST |
For England it has to be Jerusalem. You should hear it sung by 20,000 + when England come on to the pitch at Edgbaston. For a British one, has to be Rule Brittania. |
willlucv | 18 Sep 2016 8:44 a.m. PST |
Actually if we're talking cricket, God Save Your Queen sung at the Gabba during our sucessful 2010 Ashes tour was pretty memorable. |

No one has gone for "Jerusalem"! The sea shanty/drinking song "Drink old England dry". It's a song about different groups of foreign threatening to coming here and they will Drink old England dry and what we are going to do about it. There are various reincarnations of the song though the years right up to and including the second world war. Rule Britannia with original lyrics (6 verses) Hearts of Oak with original lyrics (4 verses) |
