I'm not sure what anniversary dates really amount to, but in the process of planning some history walks around a visit to New York and looking at a map of C18th Manhattan, I had a bit of a chill as I realised dawn was breaking on the 240th anniversary of the battle of 'Harlem Heights'(or 'Harlem Plains' if you prefer).

Round about now, the British light infantry would have been gathering their breath, looking out over the Hollow Way, towards Washington's lines on 'Harlem Heights,' having followed Knowlton's rangers back through the woods from their own outposts; maybe sounding a bugle to call for reinforcements…

Which included the 42nd, if I'm not mistaken.

Two things not mentioned on the previous thread about your visit:

Morris-Jumel mansion, uptown, east side- Washington's HQ in summer of '76.

NY Historical Society's exhibit on the Battle of Long Island.

Indeed, at some point, yes. The narrative is not at all clear. Certainly, the 42nd took relatively heavy casualties when they did join the fight. As many as 60 all told (5k/d.o.w; 55w) as stated by Stewart of Garth who seems to have more complete figures than Col Stirling who only cited 55 casualties on 22nd September, 1776.

Thanks, Pan. Yes, noted.

If you can get a copy of Johnson's Battle of Harlem Heights there are some neat photos if the area around 1900. Not yet built up. You get a better view of things. Also site of fort washington is marked but too built up to learn much. Reconstructed fort lee is worth a visit.

Yes, thanks. I have a pdf of the book from archive.org. Very handy.
